Maybe this has been discussed in previous discussions, but just wondering the least expensive way to send money to an inmate. It sounds like a money order sent to JPay is the least expensive, but does it really take up to a month to get to the inmate? I just found out that the prison deducts a certain percentage of the money I send to pay toward his restitution or fines or something? This doesn't sound right but I guess that's just the way it is. Nothing like taking advantage of families trying to support these inmates. Between JPay and Global Tel, it's a joke.

It's not onlya joke, it's a racket! Jpay can get the money to the inmate very quickly, if you do it online. The fees are outrageous, though. However, the last few times I have tried to use Jpay, the system couldn't process my debit or my credit card. I called them for help. They said they couldn't fix it, but they could process the payment over the phone for a dollar higher. #$%&+--@ I was so mad! Now I use Western Union for equally exorbitant fees, but at least it works online.

Yes, each state will take out money for any restitution. In CA the state will take 55%, plus the fees by JPay. I get more bang for my buck by sending quarterly packages. He gets everything he needs for several months, or gets items he can use to purchase something from someone else who goes to canteen.

Thought. I use Jpay and I remember that the attorney had told me that every time I send money it will take 55% of it to use towards his restitution, however the past two times I have used it (I've only used JPAY twice) it has gone straight into his inmate commissary account. Has that ever happened to you?

You send that amount to him, but when he receives his statement, he will have 55% less than what you sent him. If you sent him $100, you paid the JPay fee, plus the $100. When he "receives" the money, the state will remove $55, which will leave him $45 of the orginal $100 you sent.

My son's restitution in Colorado is only 20%.

Actually when he does receive his statement he tells me that he has gotten the full amount of whatever I send him both times.

Has he been transferred to main line recently? They may not be taking out his restitution yet, as his statement of restitution hasn't been received by the state yet. If they have received it and just haven't taken it out, they will be soon.
