His conviction was a state conviction and not a federal conviction. The PO's in the convicting state were a lot nicer than the PO's in the new state. The rules are different in every state for supervision of Probationees. Also the rules of the registry are different in every state as well. Also if your loved one violates probation on a state offense they will be shipped back to the original state. Another thing I didn't realize is probation is really still incarceration. People on probation are incarcerated in their home, and for Sex Offenders they are not allowed so many freedoms. Not allowed to go fishing, or hiking, or to the movies, or anything that a normal person would do to enjoy their life. They are allowed to stay in the county of their Probation department, go to work or the store, steer clear of any place that has children. It is still jail time. Can't wait for my bros time to end in 5 years.
Wish there was a chart that had all the states in it listing all the regulations for registration in that state, so if someone could choose where to live, they could at least go somewhere where there is a hint of return to normalcy.
My son is federal , different rules for state. and he's in prison being release directly to another state.
I moved over a year ago from Florida to PA to set up his residency. I took a chance. My son's counselor in prison is actually a decent guy and has helped him put in his residency there and get things set. But you never know. Im glad I took the chance. There's no residency restrictions in PA, as compared to FL. and he has no curfew.. so far. We'll know more when he sees his new PO. The one thing about Philly is they're so busy with crime and so short handed that once he settles in and the PO gets used to him Im sure life will be a lot easier for him than it would ever be in Florida.
But in each situation you have to do your homework, and if possible, get it in ink. I emailed the sheriff's office in Orlando and they emailed me back.
So very happy for you & your son. I do hope life is easier for him than it would be if you had all stayed in Florida.
My son is not out for another 8yrs., and hopefully by then, maybe, just maybe Florida will have backed off on some of this utter nonsense...but, I'm not counting on it. If I have to sell my house here, and buy in another state ( I have a small house in Southern Indiana that mother-in-law lives in now..), than that's what I will do, also.
Keep us informed on your progress in Philly.
Good luck!
I took a chance and it paid off, but it could have backfired. I've been stressed about it every minute for the past year.
Now I just have to get him up here. I think we're driving. It seems the easiest way to go.
Thanks and i will be happy to discuss privately with you, if you like.
We lived in Florida but I moved me and my business to PA over a year before his release. He got lucky that his counselor has seemed to want to help him upon release. and helped him put In his home residency as here In PA and not Florida. I held my breathe for over a year.. as it could have backfired and they might have kept in in FL.
Not everyone can move everything like I did. I did a lot of research and then took a chance.
