Please remember, the state is terminating HIS parental rights, as her grandmother YOU still have rights and you did the right thing even if it sounds like testifying against your son is tearing you apart. Your granddaughter trusted you and you listened and supported her and did not betray her trust even though her father did take advantage of her trust to molest her.
I admire your courage in testifying tomorrow. When a father sexually molests his daughter, he can't blame others for protecting his child in spite of him. It's obvious you still love him. But, as a mother and a grandmother, I really believe children must be protected first even if we are still in a relationship with the abuser. I'm glad you have your husband and a friend to see you though this. And of course, your granddaughter was right when she trusted you to stop the abuse. You are a brave lady. Please let us know what happens tomorrow.

It is so difficult when you are called to testify against your LO. They called me, and threatened me if I didn't testify (even though legally, I don't have to).

It's sad that you are in this position, but you are not picking sides. You are just relaying what your GD told you. If you are a religious person, ask God to help you on the stand.

Be honest, but say as little as possible. Only answer the questions with as much as you absolutely need to. The prosecution will try to make everything sound 10 times worse than it really is.

I have a similar situation with my son. Where is the mom of your granddaughter? If she keeps her parental rights your son will also keep his.

No matter how this hearing goes, there really is hope. You didn't say whether the state is terminating the little girls mother's rights too. You may need your own lawyer to protect your grandparent's rights to your granddaughter (depending upon what state law says) because if the agency terminates both parent's rights, the state may decide to try to adopt her out depending upon her age which is a big factor in "adoptability" A child can be adopted by grandparents and the fact that you reported the abuse and testified should be greatly in your favor. And you are the person who really cares about her and will ensure she gets treatment and can work through her feelings. Too many adoptive parents just want the child to forget about what happened and be the child they fantasized when they applied to adopt. In my experience, children have real lives before and after adoption and their past abuse cannot be ignored without great risk to their future happiness. Even if your granddaughter were to be adopted most states have adoption registries where family can leave their names so that grown children who were adopted can locate their birth parents (and grandparents)

Thank you everyone. I went to the hearing and thirty minutes into it before anyone was called to testify, my son had a private discussion with his attorney. He told his attorney he was concerned about me, knew it woild be hard on me to testify, and didn't want me to have to cry anymore. He voluntarily surrendered his rights. He had sole rights to his children, the mother's rights were terminated 4 years ago, and since I had protected my granddaughter by calling the hotline, they have approached us about adopting them. For the first time since all of this began, I got the chance to hug my son! It's been a good day!

That does sound like a wonderful day! My situation is similar, but not exactly the same. My son molested his daughter, but the mother is still in the picture. She moved away from this area so I don't get to see my grandkids very much and things have been strained between us because of other things that have happened. So I'm happy for you, that you will be able to have custody of your granddaughter. And it will be hard as your son goes through everything with sentencing and prison time, but it's something that eventually becomes the new normal in your life. Good luck!
