And because they are family, it's not as though that's the end of it. When some stranger rapes a woman, at least it IS a stranger, not some one who has been living a lie all along, not some trusted person who has made a life of betraying the people/ the children he pretended to protect. And now, after betraying his own family for years, he tells you that you "betrayed him" when you did the right thing. Hang in there. There's more "horrible" to come. There will be a hiatus while they interview victims and child protective services intervenes and tries , to help the families of the children your father harmed. Then there will be charges brought, and then court etc. and your father will probably try to round up family members to side with him against you and of course the police. He'll do his I'm sorry act to try to make you sorry that you did the right thing. Your saving grace through all the difficult times ahead is that you know he told you he did molest children, and can live with yourself because you did what grown-ups are supposed to do, you protected children. If not stopped, your father would have continued and continued molesting those kids and other children (maybe even your own children) but you stopped him. I'm glad you chose those children today no matter how horrible all this feels right now , You did the right thing. Thank you. As for your father, maybe after he has some therapy, your father will take responsibility for his own actions, stop blaming you and maybe even be glad he isn't going around taking advantage of little kids any more? We can only hope.
You did not choose truth and justice over your father today. You did what you needed to do and if he had not put you in this position...
I try to see the silver lining. I try to see the good in when bad things happen. He is feeling betrayed but then he needs to hear how he betrayed you.
You must be one hell of a roller coaster ride right now. It is normal. You will go through many feelings. So hang on and buckle up.
If it helps we have all been through this emotional ordeal. What makes it so difficult is that we love them. It would be so much easier to hate them. This hits hard. It is an internal struggle that you will flip and flop.
I love my father although it took many years to get beyond his alcoholism and his mistreatment of my mom. I finally had to let it go. I felt obligated to see him although i despised him. I cried everytime after seeing him. In the long run it came down to me. Was i going to let this affect me the rest of my life? Or can i move beyond this and make peace with myself. I choose the latter.
There is nothing wrong with loving him even though he did some heinous things. Look inside yourself. What he did had nothing to do with you.
I hope you find peace. It may take awhile.
Remember just because your father did this does not mean you can not still love him and be there for him. He will need support also. This is a decision you will have to make on your own as no one can tell you how to feel or what to do, ONLY you can make that decision.
Prayers to you
Hopefully your dad will get a fair sentence, and he sees that you were looking to help him and his victims. You were not choosing one over another.
I have been telling him and showing him I still love him. He has told most of the family by now and thankfully most everyone is very supportive. I hope my father and those that are angry will someday understand, but I will love them anyway.
(And yes I have an appointment with a counselor and have been keeping my doctor in the loop as well. )
