Been a long while since my last post and quite a bit has transpired. I have been watching in the shadows and still love this group. My praise to those who have been here faithfully sharing your knowledge and encouraging others in this wicked situation that we find ourselves in.
I am here today for any input regarding employment. I haven't had the best of results so far. I started with a trucking company last year and that went south on me rather quickly. I think rather I had Divine wisdom that the owners were dirty but couldn't nail it down. I worked one day and already I was getting the sense that it was a bad choice, so I resigned. The company was in the paper shortly thereafter regarding fraud, embezzlement and other award winning behavior that our courts frown upon.
I found a job with a landscaper and thought I hit the jackpot. Loved the work and the freedom. Started noticing a few others having drug addictions and serious hangovers. What a thrill working with 18 yr old crack addicts. Gingerly revealed the issue to my supervisor regarding drug abuse. That was a waste due to the fact that he too was an addict. Thankfully I was released for the season and never called back.
I landed another through a temp agency working at Sauder Furniture. Started out well and went very well for 90 days. Was recommended for hire, filled out app for Sauders and fired immediately. What a warm fuzzy feeling that produced. Temp agency refused to state reason why and gave me the run around. There were a few other S.O's fired after me so you can do the math.
I have had a great summer off enjoying every minute. I filed for unemployment after my last fiasco and was initially refused, then accepted then refused. I filed again and was accepted and paid, I think, checks in the mail. I then received an acceptance letter from the local Electrical Union for apprenticeship. I interviewed extensively a year ago and believed I was never to see that opportunity manifested. I have taken my physical and passed and start a week long orientation on the 11th of August.
Finally my quest... has anyone been hired by a Union and if so could you tell me what to expect regarding SO issues? I was extremely forward during a 6 member interview panel that lasted for 45 minutes concerning my felony. There were 300-400 applicants far younger than I and the I believed my chances to be nil. I really want to jump and scream but am cautious as I have been programmed to be thanks to the great State of Ohio.
Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

I'm so happy that things are looking up for you! I don't know you, but I'm extremely proud to see any s.o. keep their head up through all the madness and just push on! What strong character!! Good things are going to happen for you, and I hope you know you'll always have friends here to celebrate with.

The only thing I can think of is you might not be able to work on some job sites if they are already SO restricted like schools or the primary requires a background check. As an example where I am there's a school district with some asbestos abatement projects going on this summer. The school district is the primary and requires everyone working any of the job sites to pass a background check even though some of them aren't schools. Starting out you'll also be low man so you'll end up doing jobs the more senior people don't want but that's normal.

I hope it goes well for you, always thought you would find a way to make it work, you have the kind of attitude that keeps plugging away, hope the union keeps you busy. Somehow I think you will find a way. Hope your family is all doing well.

oh, and let us know how it works for you, all the information we can get is good.

I've read about SO's who were employed through railroad unions, and they haven't had issues - hopefully this may be a good thing for you. It's more difficult to be fired with unions....
