Human Rights Watch also spoke with another person in Georgia subject to the residency restrictions, a man in his 70s who had been convicted of molesting his granddaughter a decade ago. The residency restriction law forced him to leave his home and he moved to a trailer in a wooded area outside of Atlanta, Georgia. "I couldn't afford to move to a trailer park. I didn't know where to go. I feel like there is no other place I can go except here. But here I am isolated. I don't have easy access to the world. What if I fall down and break my hip? I will admit that at first I considered not registering, going underground. But I wanted to do the right thing, whatever that is in this situation, and so I am trying to abide by the law."[391]
My heart goes out to this man, who poor guy, wants to do the right thing, but will be damned in doing so...just what happened to us for doing the right thing in reporting an offense.
His dilemma moves my heart and so I must tell you what the P.A. TOLD ME in one of those disrespectful, undignified meetings where he proceeded to cut me down right in front of my abused daughter: HE GLIBBLY THAT HE'D TALKED TO PEOPLE WITH NO MORE THAN 2 DIMES TO RUB TOGETHER AND THAT WHATEVER IT TOOK THEY'D BE HAPPY BECAUSE THEIR DAUGHTER WAS SAFE.. HIS TOADIES IN THE OFFICE TOO SAID THAT IF I HAD TO GO LIVE IN A TRAILER I SHOULD BE HAPPY. ( NOW THAT WAS THE LAW TALKING to us THE VICTIMs!) HERE I AM SO TIMELY REMINDED OF THE QUOTE OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE FOUNDING FATHERS, BEN FRANKLIN, WHO STATED: "Those who give up their liberty for more security neither deserve liberty nor security." I take that to believe that I am entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I do NOT have to lose my liberty to have security that, by the way, these people are suggesting that if I lose it all, I will be safer. The PA is a fool to think like that and especially a fool to think I'm going to buy that ridiculous b***t..
There's a good RSOL group in Virginia, Mary and John are the names of the State Contracts and are doing great work. If you visit the reformsexoffenderlaws.org site, you can find their contact information.
I apologize that I haven't posted in quite some time. We're spending many hours getting the W.A.R. (Women Against the Registry) movement going and hope to be up soon. As promised earlier, I'll let you know when we launch.
Take care,
