I guess I should start by giving you a little bit of a background without saying too much, considering I'd prefer to be left anonymous. My name is D. I'm twenty years old. My younger brother, G, is a registered sex offender. He will be 19 years old later this year.
A few years back, he was convicted of molesting a six year old boy. After being put on probation, he went to live with my dad. Long story short, my dad isn't the kind of man or father he should be. I despise him with every ounce of my being, and that's only gotten worse over the years. Well, when my brother went to live with him, things only got worse. My brother was told to be supervised everywhere that he went. My dad doesn't really care to do that part of his parenting, or any type of parenting for that matter. My brother didn't even have his own room. He slept in the dining room, where he had full access to every room in the house. My step-mother has three kids, the oldest is a girl, A, and two younger boys, B and D. My brother had consensual anal sex with A, the thirteen year old girl. He also molested the oldest of the two boys, B. He was charged and convicted for molesting B, but wasn't charged for A considering it was with her consent. He spent a little over a year in a juvenile center in Texas. All of this happened between within the last two to five years (the first incident being the six year old when my brother was about 13-14, and the last with B being about 2-3 years ago).
Now, he's obviously served his time and he's doing much better. He hasn't gotten into any kind of trouble since he's been out, but I still can't get over all that has happened. My mother received all of his paperwork when he finally got out of the halfway house. Reading through it, we learned exactly what he was charged with, and also learned the full details of his crimes. The things that I read -- I will never be able to forget. It feels like it's all so new because I've finally learned exactly what he did to those children.
I have an 18 month old son of my own. Knowing the things that he did break my heart for two reasons -- one, I couldn't even imagine what I would do if someone had done those things to my son; two, that's my baby brother that did those things. I feel as though I don't even know who he is anymore, or if I ever did.
One thing that we learned a few years back is that my brother was sexually molested. When he was younger and lived with my dad, my dad was dating a woman named Gw who had a son named J. Apparently, J had been sexually molesting my brother. J was my age, so maybe a year older than my brother. It all seems to make sense because my brother started failing school, acting out, and even took a knife to school around that time. My brother hasn't been the same since then.
I'm so afraid that G will never go back to being my brother. It kills me knowing that I can't do anything for him like I wish I could. I want to help him more than anything in this world! My brother needs help, and I just don't know what to do. He's never opened up to me about what happened to him, or what he did to those children.
I know that I'm just rambling, but I am so lost. Is there any way that I can help my brother? How can I tell if he was just a "curious teenager" or if he truly has "urges" for little boys? If it is urges and an attraction to young boys, is there a way to get him help so that urge goes away? Maybe I'm just thinking unrealistically, but that's my baby brother. I want to help him any way that I can. Any help, advice, and support is greatly appreciated right now. Thank you so much for even reading this.
I'm so glad that I found this forum. I don't talk to anyone about this because I haven't found anyone who understands. That's why I'm really hoping to meet others here who know and understand what I'm going through. My mom is having a really hard time dealing with a lot of this as well. So, again, thank you all so much!

Family support, housing and employment also help ensure he doesn't reoffend, as he has more to lose. I know it's scary for you as a mother. But you know now that the biggest dangers to our kids are family members or those close to the family. Knowing your brother's past, and knowing how these crimes are committed in secret, you are better prepared to protect your son.
Welcome!
ThoughtAsWeak: Thank you for your support and kind words. It means a great deal to me. I'd like to find my brother the right kind of treatment that he needs, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. Not only is he living in Texas and I am in South Carolina, but I'm just not sure of where to find the right therapist for him in his area. He's been through enough, and I don't want him to endure more emotional trauma due to the mistakes that he's made. I want someone to want to help him. I want someone to want to help him get better and turn his life around. It's hard to find people like that these days. I don't want him to feel like his entire life is over because of the choices he made at a young age. I know and understand that it's going to be hard for him to come back from things like that, and he does too, but he's willing to do better. I'm just scared of him falling into the wrong crowd and "trying to fit in." I don't want to see him get in more trouble.
I completely agree with you as far as how I'm going to protect my son. My baby is just that -- a baby. It's so hard not being able to trust him with his own uncle, but I will do what I have to do to protect my son. I've made that very clear to my brother, as well. It's so hard, but anytime that my brother sees my son, it will be under my supervision. No one else's. For the sake of my child's safety. It really hurts for me to say that, but it's my only option. My brother lost a lot of my trust. I'm hoping that overtime, it can be gained back. But only with time can that happen.
I'm just worried about my brother. I want him to get help so bad. I'm so scared that he may never be the same again. I'm not sure how I could take that. But if he were to go see a professional, I would feel much better with their diagnosis on what to do next.
Again, thank you both so much for your kind words and support! You really have no idea what it means to me!
Knowing your brother wants to change and get help, says a lot about him and will work to ensure he never reoffends.
I am a mother as well, a mother of an abuse survivor, who has healed from the abuse and forgave her dad. She saw that he was sorry for his actions and believes he doesn't want to offend again. We support him the best we can while he is in prison...

There are others in this group that are familiar with Texas or reside there, who could offer you more info for your brother...
Good Luck
It makes me happy to know that my brother wants to change, but sometimes I worry that he's just telling us that because he knows that's what we want to hear. He, unfortunately, has picked up on a lot of our father's traits -- lying without remorse being one of them.
Thank you for the resources. I will try and do what I can from here. It really means a lot to me. Thank you!
As for your daughter, I am so sorry that happened to her. I truly can't even imagine. For her sake, I really hope that she and her father can repair their relationship. If he's truly guilt-ridden about it, I hope that he can turn everything around and work towards his daughters absolute forgiveness. It's hard not having a father in your life, but I couldn't imagine it being under those circumstances. I'm so sorry for that.
Unfortunately, I can't offer much advice in terms of getting your brother treatment but just the fact that you're trying to help says a lot. Its hard especially when you are far away. Your brother is lucky to have you on his side. I think just the fact that he has supportive family members makes all the difference in the world. Its a shame that criminals (and particularly sex offenders) don't always get the mental health care that they need. If we were really concerned about recidivism, I would think that would be priority #1 instead of a registry.
