This is what I did when I went to visit my husband in prison in Wisconsin. I left everything in the car locked up tight... all except the plastic bag of change and my ID and car keys, you'll be able to put the ID and keys in a locker before you go into the prison... I suggest to take at least $15 in change or more so that you can get things out of the vending machines during your visits for him and yourself. Remember no underwire bras or they will have you take them off and put them back on again before you go in.. PITA if you ask me... no metal buttons on your clothes like on back pockets, I have seen them set off the metal detectors there. I usually wore plain jeans or yoga pants when I went cause they were comfy and they walked right through the metal detector.
Let me know if you have any questions.
2. Be prepared to wait. Even if it says visiting hours are from A to B, it doesn't mean you'll get to see him at A.
3. Be careful of your interaction with the COs and try not to take offense at anything the COs say to you unless there are witnesses to egregious behavior or speech. If they can draw you into an argument, either you or your SIL may end up paying for it, even if the CO is wrong or inappropriate.
But yes, agree with Wisconsin and jump on the internet, plug in the prison and read all the visiting rules. They seem to vary from prison to prison. I generally don't eat the food in the vending machines except maybe cookies, crackers or a bottle of water but my son eats quite a bit and the food is pricey so take enough with you. I am allowed 40.00 in my plastic see-through bag. I use a clear make-up bag, some people just have regular Ziploc baggies. Also in the bag is my car key and photo Id, that is all you will be allowed to take in with you. They even made me throw away my tissues (because I knew I would cry).
He will be very happy and grateful to have visitors and get that great big hug!
