Guilty Until Proven Innocent

 My hubby is serving 18 months for excepting a plea bargain on two counts of attempted sexual assault. It was/is a disgusting sad situation/claim. He had gotten very intoxicated and doesn’t know what happened or what is true. Despite that I know he deserves to be punished but what he’s received is a lifetime sentence of judgment and unfair humiliation. Is there anyone else who is had a similar situation with advice? He will have to register unfortunately and we have a one and a half-year-old daughter together. His other two older children love him dearly and have never had any issues before.  We ended up excepting the plea bargain because they were threatening 6 to 12 years if we went to court. Makes me sick that the legal system can place you in a category  and define an individual for their worst mistake without even being proven guilty! Anyway I’m done venting. Hope someone can provide some positive insight I’m so nervous about our future together with him having to register. Will we be able to buy a home? Will anyone want to sell to us? I know there are limitations on where you can live. And I already know some rental companies refuse to rent to sex offenders. I don’t understand how that’s fair or legal but I guess discrimination doesn’t matter when you’re an RSO which is bullshit!  Every situation is unique and no I’m not supporting RSO individuals  or devaluing/degrading victims of sexual assault but in my hubby’s case and many others the charges aren’t proven or even happened. OK I’m done I promise. God bless

Can you buy a house being on the registry? Yes, your money will spend just as well as anyone else’s. Renting is infinitely more tricky for people on the registry. You are right, we can be discriminated against legally by owners of property. That is why it is so important to buy property if you can.

Depending on your state you may have restrictions on where you can live. These are called residency restrictions, but if you move to the right state you won’t have to deal with that. What state are you coming from?

Life won’t be the same now that he is on the registry but it doesn’t mean life is over. You can get to a new normal when he is out and off parole. It certainly makes life harder but not impossible.

Keep in mind the laws are constantly changing in the states. As you know or will surmise our families can be targets either by word of mouth, flyers or publicly displayed registries. Women Against Registry fights to educate the public, media and legislators who will tell you they don't know know everything about scientific research or what is in every bill. If you are new to this issue as I was this is where I started and began to find support and then began to support others. Then began to work toward advocating for families of those required to register. Please, when you get your legs back under you begin to educate yourself and get active in educating others.
