Google steps in where the government won't

Some of you may know one of my big issues with cp prosecutions is the fact the government has been able to track all known cp for several years now and has done nothing towards actually blocking it or destroying it. Instead they have focused on the "demand" racking up conviction after conviction.

Google is apparently moving towards actually doing something worthwhile by actively blocking and eliminating cp by building an open database that can be shared across search engines and companies. While it does sound like big brother you have to remember big brother government has been tracking cp in this manner since 2005 just to rack up convictions.

Glad Google is doing something to help stop CP from bring viewed and shared online.

Sounds like a public relations bag of gas to me. Google just serves up links that are run by algorithm bots. Even if they could ferret out these sites, how could they really do it? Facial/Age recognition software? How about just a good old-fashion blacklist? - Again, sounds like a PR stunt. Most child porn convictions are file-sharing. Google can't do jack about a peer network. Nor can they shut a website down. All they can do is remove links on their engine and report them for investigation. Oh, and report all cookie data about the users who have traveled there. Brave new world...

Hash values which is exactly how law enforcement and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children do it and have been doing ti for years. You'd be surprised just how much impact Google would have on peer to peer networks. Newsgroups and nzb indexers operate on central servers, torrents use trackers and need indexers for the end user and other peer to peer networks leverage Google api's for their search functions.

This is supposed to be an open system for others to tap into as well so it isn't a stretch for your ISP to tap the database to filter illegal images on your connection which would impact peer to peer networks that don't require the services of a server somewhere.

Again this is something the government has been doing for years to arrest and prosecute people. Google is just taking it public and to the next level by actively trying to block or eliminate child porn instead racking up prosecutions.

whether it is a bag of gas or something that may actually create change time will tell. all i know is something has to be done and if the government wont do it which they wont because obviously it is paying to many wages for them to actually want it eradicated. what about a series of p.s.a. s? there is no doubt in my mind that had many known the consequences of accessing adult porn leading to c.p. leading to 5-20 they would not be where they are.

one of the reasons i knew i could not keep quiet about this and tell everyone, some knew how easy it is to access but none knew the harsh sentencing involved...they do now!

Awareness is a good thing. I agree with that. But google is not making the public aware of the law. There are simply becoming more and more an arm of law enforcement.

Also, this seems to me to be an attack on the porn industry in general.

I could care less about any porn. However, I raise a brow when civilian third parties are given policing powers. Red flag to me.
