Kelly has been asking for a calendar for about month or so. today i had a packet of things to mail out to her and had planned on putting a calendar that i have here in the envelop but forgot it when i left the house. i ended up going to books-a-million to get one for her. found a blue mountain arts calender that was simply breathtaking. and it was a deal because all of their calendars are on a 50% sale.
an idea hit me. she has talked about one of the inmates there that makes cards for the others to send home. this inmate trades and barters to the other that want cards. and i think all of us know that the 'selling', trading and bartering of things and services go on in prison. if any of you have seen the blue mountain cards in the stores you know that they are beautiful with awesome poems, sayings and inspirational messages. so i thought, why couldn't kelly when she's done with the calendar, if she takes good care of it, use it for barter/trade for something she might want from the commissary? so i bought 2 more calendars of a different style. if she wants she can trade the individual pics or the whole calendar. after buying my goodies there i ran back into town and bought some blank all purpose cards. if i sign them lightly in pencil she will be able to erase it and either reuse the cards or barter them off. even if i don't sign the cards i can just slip a short letter in with the card and mail it to her.
told her about the calendar and my idea tonight when she called and she was excited. she said that she should be able to barter something like that with no prob!!! also told her that if she can think of anything that i can send for this idea to let me know and if i can afford it i will do it.
found a journal that i was mad about but didn't even bother with it because it was hard-covered. so i bought sent her a rubbery soft covered journal that looked tie dyed. i told her that she didn't need to use it as a diary because of possible security problems, but that if she had a prevailing thought or musing that she could write it down and date it.
between the spanish books i've sent out, now coloring, puzzle and word-find books, the calender and the journal she should be at least a little busy for the next month or so! LOL plus after i get a new black ink cartridge i am gonna print off the RSOL Jan newsletter and mail it to her. OH! and she said that the magazines i have are just fine to send her too. gonna go bankrupt via the cost of post office mailings! LOL

it is strange tho on the things that you can and can't send. i can't send anything at all that would be personal care and that includes hairbands and barrettes. and i can't send elastic or any yarn, not even a small string of it. screwy, screwy rules!!!
every so often i will spray one of the letters i send to her with my perfume. the first time i did it she said that the other inmates all crowded around to get a sniff! she says that when she first gets one of those letters that she sleeps with it. and that she loves to open her locker because when she does the smell of the letters remind her of me. i choke up wicked when she tells me that.
As fair as the glitter or thicker cards and being able to send them in well people have been known to put drugs in them same with hard covered books.
Your best bet is really know the rules of the place your loved one is in some places they can even make a issues of people sending in more then one item.
I do hope she gets the extra calendar's
i also send her pics that i have printed off the net. i know that she can't keep all of them, so maybe she can trade them or give them away to someone?
