So, my ward got signed up with a new Internet Service Provider. The representative, who could barely speak any English, royally screwed up. She spelled his last name incorrectly.
While ordinarily this would not be an issue for the common man, it is for my ward because under Missouri law, sex offenders have to register his email address. The ISP has an automatic email address for each customer.
Trouble is, we registered the wrong email address though no fault of my ward, but rather, the screw up of the ISP representative. The time limit of three business days to register changes in a sex offender's status, ended today and we did not discover this until this evening. By the letter of the law, my ward could very well be arrested, jailed, charged, and prosecuted for the royal screw up of the ISP representative, and the second representative who assured us today that his name was spelled correctly.
Now, I sent an email to the Deputy Sheriff that we deal with on SO registration matters, and forwarded her a copy of my email to the ISP informing them that his last name is spelled incorrectly. I hope that is sufficient to prevent his arrest and so on, but I am now forced to brace for impact because one never knows what LE will do to SO's these days.

When we got the expected package from the ISP, we found that his last name was spelled incorrectly. We called to have this corrected, and we were assured it was corrected. However, when I went to access the email address, we discovered that his last name was still spelled incorrectly. So, I immediately sent the Deputy Sheriff an email informing her of the issue and asking how to proceed here.
I am hoping that our efforts are good enough to prevent his arrest, jail, charge, and prosecution for failing to register an online account, i.e. correct email address.
It is a felony to fail or refuse to register the proper email address. While it is not the fault of my ward and he had zero control over things, he could be arrested, jailed, charged, and prosecuted, anyway by the letter of the law.
Suffice to say, I have documented things to protect my ward.
I am so glad and my ward feels better.
