I'm not sure where to get advice on this, so I'm hoping there are people in the group who know what to do about this. I know I posted once before about taking care of my son's bills, but it just seems like a mountain of debt the more I look at it, and I don't have financial POA yet -- supposed to be getting that later this week.

Here's the problem: The two credit cards my son and his soon-to-be ex-wife have are both maxed out, and once they are split up, they are at least managable. But they've had a home foreclosed on that was supposed to be sold at a sheriff's sale, and I'm assuming there's going to be an amount above what it sold for that they will still owe - no idea how much, and the DIL doesn't even seem concerned about keeping track of that. Plus, they have payments on cars -- the one she's still driving and the one that he had that was repossessed because they couldn't make the payments, but looks like he still owes around $13,000 on. She hasn't made payments on anything, saying "It will get sorted out in the divorce" but hasn't contacted any of the companies to explain that to them, so interest keeps piling up. And from what I saw, looks like she wiped out the bank account so the one car that was supposed to be paid through automatic transfer didn't get paid.

I know someone made a comment about bad credit being wiped after 7 years, but does that mean we should just ignore the house and car payments that are so huge that they'll never get paid? Or contact the companies and try and work something out? I don't want to get stuck paying for my son's (and ex-DIL's) bad judgement, and if his VA benefits are cut when he's in prison, there will be no money to pay any of this back. At least if the VA money doesn't get cut, I can try to pay off some of the credit card debt.

Any help or advice would be immensely appreciated!
