The story “Group sues sex offender” [News, April 24] refers to a private organization, Parents for Megan’s Law, founded by Laura Ahearn. The group has brought a defamation lawsuit against a registered sex offender, Derek W. Logue, who runs a civil rights organization for sex offenders, on account of his public and critical comments about Parents for Megan’s Law. Several revelations in the article are deeply disturbing.
First is the fact that Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is about to renew the contract with Ahearn’s organization. And for what? To carry out an exclusively public, governmental legal responsibility, which is seeing that New York’s Sex Offender Registration Act is obeyed.
Parents for Megan’s Law is not the Suffolk County Police Department. As Newsday’s article points out, the group is already a defendant in a federal civil rights lawsuit for a home interrogation of another man, and now you report that it is hauling into court yet another of its critics.
Is anybody minding the store?

This 'privatization of '"Supervision" aka police' / probation/ parole and prison functions is very concerning to me since by billing themselves as 'civil' (and not punishment) they avoid most of the accountability we as tax payers and voters have (hoped) to expect from government entities. And, as for-profit "non-profits" now free to advertise their vigilante "activities" as in the public interest.
For example these folks want to privatize "law enforcement' and for that they want 7 million . $$$$$ (and Ahearn and her merry band of retired cops plan to key into public prejudice, target the 'baddest of the guys' in order to get rich (without anyone criticizing them ...) (and who does back-ground checks on these cops or audits their bank accounts/) Are the subject even to 'freedom of Information' inquiries when someone is tasered and dies resisting Ahern's private (not for profit) their custody?
This is going to end in disaster for a lot of families...And how do they get the right to arrest 'people' and take them....where-ever...when they decide "we" are not following the rules? We apparently don't even have the right to criticize (we can at least criticize actual 'government" cops...What rights do we have when this all turns to doo doo and We try to sue them back for unlawful arrest and imprisonment because once 'arrested' for non-compliance who do you think will be testifying in Ahearn's behalf except her merry band of ingrown vigilantes getting rich not off of writing ticket but from arresting and imprisoning?

Because Remember when the powers that be wanted to privatize social security (have it managed by private hedge funds ) and put all the social security $$$ in the stock market (that was just a couple of years before the 2018 bank bail out) They claimed that privatization plan was all about the public good......but had they done that how do you think 'privatization' would have worked out when the crash came and the hedge fund managers claimed they were too big to jail for their own greed?
That is is all about money and those fat retired cops hired by Ahearn to enforce 'privatized' prejudice and vigilantism and most of all their own GREED. But then Ahearn want s to sue anyone who 'raises' issues about her operation or questions why she and 6 retired cops need 7 million tax dollars....?
As the Retired Justice asks, "Is anybody minding the store?"
