The girl had claimed the attack occurred around 8 p.m. Tuesday outside the Forest Edge Apartments on Weston Lane near Lake Weston Elementary School.
According to Orange County sheriff's deputies, the girl, who had said she was walking near the school when a man grabbed her from behind, was neither attacked nor sexually assaulted.
The girl was taken to a hospital after claiming she was attacked.
Deputies said it turns out that the girl fought with other children, and when she was asked about her bruises, she made up the attack.
"What goes through my mind? I've got to move. First it's break-ins and robberies and now its attacking kids. It's too much," a neighbor said before deputies announced that the story was made up.
Parents at the complex said they took extra caution and took their kids to school in the morning instead of letting them walk.
The Sheriff's Office said the community pays the price for false reports like this one.
"When it's a false report, it takes away from the rest of the community. We have 17 deputies, K-9 and a chase helicopter. Perimeters set up. It taxes our staff and it's a safety issue with the community," Angelo Nieves of the Sheriff's Office said.

bagger, are you KIDDING me?? Is that even legal? That is horrible I would love to know the percentage of people on the registry who had some kind of sexual interaction with a BABY. Seriously? God, this stuff just makes me so angry. People are SO BLIND.
When a teen went missing where we live, our son, as well as everyone on the registry in our area, were visited by the "TEAM". He was handcuffed and questioned. His place searched. During that horrible time, someone made copies of our son's picture from the registry and plastered them everywhere. On mailboxes, on cars etc. in his complex. Then his truck was broken into and all his tools were stolen.
We reported it to the police. Did anyone care? NO.
I didn't sleep for weeks thinking that some nut was going to kill him.
How many parents have been accused of killing their children in recent years? Some we hear about, some not so much. And yet, do we say all parents are monster's? Of course not.
Not all people who get accused of a sex crime are guilty. But, once accused it is almost impossible to prove your innocence. In our state, there are many who do not deserve to be put on the registry. And I am sick to death of them referring to teen girls that are 16 and 17, as a child. How many women out there considered themselves as a child at 17? At 17, they work, drive, and know right from wrong. Sorry...off subject, just venting I guess.
