I'm a resident of TN; my charge landed me on the TN SOR back in 2005. After supervised release (Fed charge) ended in 2008 I began the long but attainable journey toward getting off the TNSOR in 2018. I was considered a sex offender (not violent) and kept my life clean, legal, and well below the radar of law enforcement. However, around April-May 2014 the governor signed into law certain amendments of the TNSOR and one will affect me. Because at least one victim in the cp I plead guilty to is 12 years or less of age I fall under the "crimes against children" law and I will have to register for LIFE.

I've taken steps to keep my family together. We're moving since we cannot live together in TN and I don't care to wait 10 years for my stepdaughter to reach 18. At least in MS we can live together but I'll have to register every 90 days for life. We chose MS for my fiance's job and ability to live together. However, the idea of registering for LIFE really eats at me. I often feel angry and powerless to do anything. Which leads to feelings of depression. It affects my relationship and and it is constantly on my mind. I'm posting with the request to those of you who are in a similar situation to please help me by telling me how you cope. What do you do? What, if anything..can I do to deal with this?

I, unfortunately, became a lifer when I moved from Vermont to South Carolina (1 count CP...State) My Vermont plea deal was for 10 years on the registry after probation. My current PO tells me that that will change as they are in discussions with the sheriffs as it is a known fact that the numbers will only increase causing law enforcement to spend more and more time wasting their time baby sitting rather than spending it on real policing enforcing a law that does nothing to protect anyone. It's just a matter of time and money before their hand will be forced to make changes.

I have to report to the sheriff twice a year for photos and they visit me 4 times a year to make sure I'm still living where I told them I am. Other than that, that's all there is. There are no living restrictions here except for 5 offenses all involving children (Your offense would not apply here I believe) There is a $150 per year charge to register otherwise that's it.

You would be able to keep your family together here I believe. I live 4 miles from the beach.

TNCatlover, you can FIGHT the laws, work with others to change the laws that are unfair, unjust, and unconstitutional!

CA has lifetime registration for ALL sex offenders. We currently have over 100k on the registry, that the Sex Offender Managemnet Board is suggesting a tiered registry, as they cannot keep up with all registrants, and see that many are not threats to society. They want to focus more on those who do have a greater risk.

I would also see about filing a lawsuit, if you have the funds to do so, saying that the extension of your registration requirement is a violation of ex post facto (most states have this in their constitution).

at this moment for my daughter's sake, NH is sounding really good. but there's no knowing how the laws will change here in TN in the next 10yrs for her.

so for now, i can afford to wait.
