He will need to register with the local/county/state police when he gets out. You most likely will get a visit from the police sex offender unit usually quarterly or yearly depending on the state. The police can check as often as they’d like. These are basically done to make sure the offender is living where they say they are living.
It is very important that you are courteous to the police at the front door if you answer. BUT they have no right to come into your home without a warrant. So if they ask to come look around you very politely tell them that you have a policy of not allowing unreasonable searches, but you would be happy to oblige if they would go get a judge to sign a warrant. When they ask you what are you hiding, you say nothing, but that’s my policy.
My wife asked the cop with a big grin if she could go search his house if he had nothing to hide. That stopped anymore conversation and he wished her a good day.
Despite what you were taught growing up, the police are not your friend. They are looking for any reason to give your ex a failure to register, which is a felony. So when they come to your door they are fishing for info, just be nice and pleasant but don’t give them anything other than yes he lives here. (Obviously if he is home then have him come to the door and talk to the officer)
