In my personal experience, if they are investigating, those hard drives won't be returned until they are done scanning. If they find content they stay confiscated

They claim they found stuff on my computer from 2002 and my dads work files. But the problem with that is I didnt even own it in 2002. My husband bought it used in 2007. And why would my dads work files be on my computer. Those file wouldnt have even been created until much later when he got that job. So Im thinking they got it mixed up with a different computer.

If you want your computer, you are going to have to stay on top of it. If they truly did find anything on the computers, the computers will be destroyed with no chance of ever getting it back. If there wasn't anything on the computers, you will be able to get them back, but only after staying on the investigators. It will be months before this is possible. They will not just show up at your house and say, "hey, we didn't find anything, here are your computers back." Nor will they even give you a call to come claim them.If you don't claim them, they will probably be sold at police auction where they make money from it, so they have no incentive to give them back. You will have to stay on them making calls to find out what's going on.

I agree - you need to stay on top of it and call everyone - make a nuisance of yourself. Do you have some proof that you did not own the computer back in 2002? Kind of odd becasue any computer built in 2002 would be extremely outdated? Sounds to me like they are playing games with you ...

They also took my computers when my son was arrested - when the shock lifted I realized that the brand new laptop I had just purchased had a lot of my personal info on it including my information for my masters degree thesis. I called the sheriffs department repeatedly and finally they agreed to copy my files onto a disc for me. They also told me if my computer had been password protected they would not have taken it (not sure if that was a lie but I always put a password on now)

I had to fight to get the computer back - had to ask for a judge to have a hearing because after my son was sentenced they refused to give me back my property. Finally the judge gave it back under the provision that the hard drive be emptied - they did but when my brand new computer came back they had ruined it - it never worked correctly again ....

I agree w/ all of the above. They took numerous items from our family. It was only after constant vigilance they were returned, some damaged as well.

Not sure - never had to deal with the PO taking them thank goodness

unfortunately even if you hound them to get your computers back they can/will do anything they want. In my case they hired officers to go through my stuff. After finding nothing they destroyed everything. It'll cost you more to take them to court than it is to just buy a new PC.

what I don't get is why distroying the whole computer all they need to do is distroy the hardrives

They took everything from our house when my son was arrested. Our lawyer kept on them until they finally returned items that weren't under suspicion. It took months and a lot of the stuff was broken upon return.

I must be lucky - they gave me back my computers one month after the search. They tell me that since my name is on the phone bill, they will give me the phone after he is prison. I don't really expect that though.

my moms name is on the receipts to my macbook she got it for me a few years ago any chance that could be used to get it back like stat ?

With my husband they scanned all our devices in our home during the raid. Nothing was "red flagged", they knew what device they needed. They took my phone as it needed different equipment. I had the support of Stop It Now and one of their advisors told me as my husband confessed I was not under investigation, they knew what they were looking for. I called daily to get it back, I spoke to one of the officers who was in the raid. He was amazing, he told me he had been trying to get it released since it was taken. He sent a colleague round with it that evening still in the clear bag.

The device used was incinerated after the case was over.
