My son is having a CC against him by the facility because he made a civil rights complaint about his health, verbal abuse by staff, and mishandling of his mail. He lost his phone privileges and they extended his stay at the facility an additional 2 months. He says they can keep him in for life. He found out through the Dist. Hearing Officer. Has anyone come across this problem? How did you handle it? Is there someone who can help since he does not have an attorney? Is there a civil liberty group I can contact? I'm at a total loss especially now I can't talk to him on the phone and who knows if they will give him my mail. All this because he was trying to get medical attention, get his mail, and not being verbally abused! Thank you.
First of all, make a written documentation of all the facts, including names, dates and times of phone calls. You'll have more chance of getting help, if you're organized and can produce copies of everything.
In what state are you located? There are probably advocacy groups in your state.
There is a hotline number on the National RSOL website. Have you tried calling them?
I also found out that I can contact Hub's Obudsman to complain about his treatment and lack of supplies (ie toothbrush) and other concerns I have. They are liaisons between us and the prison officials and will ensure that he will be given the care and treatment he needs and deserves. I have already contacted Hub's. Obudsman, we shall see how that works out.
