1) Registration. Demand that everyone be registered. Murder, Kidnapping, Bank Robbery, Drug Dealers. Tell your representatives how frightened you are and you want action. I know of no town or city that could afford this. Bankrupt them. Lets see what happens when Mayors and Governors start yelling.
2) Politics. At least look up who sponsors this sorry legislation. Remember it. Tell you friends (and enemies too) how bad these representatives are. Don't use their record on Sex Offender issues against them....use their whole voting record against them. Only when these people are driven out of office will everything stop. It's so easy, it's all on the internet. Last thing: VOTE.
3) Law. If you are an attorney or you know an attorney ask them to do something. Request an injunction. File a lawsuit. Send a letter of complaint. I've seen several request to submit your name as a party to SO lawsuits. So tell them YES. It's free.
Only if we do these things do we stand a chance. It's time to stop talking. JUST DO IT!
1) Demanding all to be registered would seem a little self serving coming from our camp. Just a cursory look at recidivism statistics show that all other violent criminals besides murderers have a much higher recidivism rate than sex offenders. However do I want to live in a world where people aren't given a second chance, that we define all by their worst behavior in a small window of time in their life? I know personally how that feels, I wouldn't wish that on MOST of my enemies lol. I think it's fair to question why there aren't registries for other violent crimes and again the stats support this, but to support putting more people under the scrutiny we are I cannot condone that.
2) Politics. We all know who sponsored this bill. The problem is that this makes him more not less popular in his district. There is simply too much to gain politically by punishing sex offenders more severely to take everyone of these politicians out. "If it only saves one child" is a powerful phrase that politicians can build their careers on and stay in office almost indefinitely. This isn't s politician problem, even if they believed sex offenders didn't pose a significant threat they would be smart to use this type of legislation to get re-elected. The problem is the media and the people believing the BS the politicians are feeding us. Journalists should be jumping up and down citing statistics and showing how this doesn't help stop sex crimes--instead they are complicit in the behavior to target sex offenders. Actual crime has gone down yet fear of crime has skyrocketed, thank you media.
So yes, please vote, everyone who can should. But I don't see that as a way to stop this nonsense.
3) You are right Phillip that the best way to stop this is in the courts. I cannot wait to see what comes of this lawsuit, I would guess the 9th circuit is probably the best place to try this lawsuit.
I personally do not like the idea of going out individually and filing injunctions. It will cost a lot of money to do that individually. Why not pool our resources and time and effort into the organizations that we have that are fighting for us? CA RSOL has had so many victories the last couple of years, I am beyond impressed.
