I am off the registry in IL - have been for years.

For "fun" because I'm planning on meeting with a lawyer about state registry laws I ran a background check on myself as a "pre-employment" scan.

I was shocked (I was) to see me listed as being a SO / registered. And in two states - the one I lived in in 1999 and IL.

Shouldn't that be gone? I mean don't they compare to CURRENT registries when they check?

I did expect the charge to be there - I know felonies don't go away. But my status as a Registered SO...

Anything I can do about that?? Can I petition somewhere for it to be removed?

Why do I care - you ask?

I notice more and more schools are using that Raptor system to screen people visiting - I really don't want to come up on my son's school system !!! And they are talking of putting these Raptor systems in libraries, etc. Ugh.

I want to add that I went out to the National site - and I'm not on it for any state. So obviously this background screening company is archiving data somehow....

And I know I'm ranting to myself now..... but I paid another $50 (rip off) for another site that didn't show even my felony conviction.... so what gives? It's really just about the randomness of what background screening company is used? The $20 screen showed everything the $50 screen gave me a clean pass!

No one I know has gotten off the registry, it is so rare. Sorry we can not help but i will see how it works in Texas when someone gets off when I go to the conference, they may have some advice that can help you. Wait, I remember a member who had just gotten off at last years conference and he had the same questions. Hope he makes it to this one - I will find out how it is going for him.

I'm guessing this screening company is scanning archive sites?

I'm almost thinking of contacting the screening company to complain.

I know my old registry listing is out there on SO archive sites.

The only regret I have in leaving IL is there's a bill pending now making it illegal to charge to have your data removed from an archive site.

Try just typing your name on a web search and see what comes up. I know when my son was arrested - not convicted mind you, just arrested- his picture and charge came up for one and all to see. I didn't have to pay to check that out but the information the outfit that put it on the web said that a person could try to get it off their site for a fee of $99 but there were not guarantees they would removed a person's name, photo and charge(s).

Many states have a state web site for public access of court records - ours does plus the SO registry site.

When I google my name buried (now) several pages in are archived versions of sex offender registries.

My crime was 'committed' ( I use that term loosely as I didn't really commit a crime in my eyes) 18+ years ago. Thankfully before the web!!

When I go to the archive sites they want me to pay.

Ugh. Shame on those people.

I know several states are forbidding the charge for removal of old data.

When I go to the Dru Sjorin site I'm not on it.

I am still listed in the archive sites, I'm off the registry also. They make no mention of that.
