You should have no issues with removing him. I've done that when my husband went on deployments and now too with him in prison. They don't usually ask why and ig they do you don't really have to tell them since it's none of their business.

Do you think I would have to remove him? He is the primary policy holder, it's also a policy for military, he's the one who was military. I guess I'm also worried about the rates going up taking him off the policy, wondering if we would still get the military discounts and all that. I guess I never removed my husband when he was deployed, he was gone almost 15 months on deployment and I just left everything as is. However, this time he will be gone 4 plus years and I know his drivers license will expire before he returns home. I can't remember if his drivers license expired or not when he was deployed.

That's an interesting concept. When I was searching for car insurance, I was just getting quotes, and at each company I would put my husband as the policy holder, then I would put me as the policy holder and just see if the quote was any different. And at some companies when I was the policy holder, our rate was lower. But I don't know if that has anything to do with his history. It could be a number of things. But we went with Geico and no matter who the policy holder was we had the same rate. We haven't had any troubles with Geico.

Advocate2 - I don't know for sure, I would assume it would depend on their status with the military when charges were filed, such as if they were still enlisted or not. My husband retired after 21 years in the military before he was charged with his crime. The only thing I'm really aware of changing is my husband does receive VA Disability, now with that, on the 61st day of incarceration his disability amount drops to 10% of what he receives, however once he's out of prison it goes back to the full amount. Other then that, I'm not aware of any major changes. In fact if you do a google search for incarcerated vets, I have come across programs that will actually help a veteran with transitioning back into society once they have served their time.

My husband's drivers licence expired when he was in prison and we had no trouble with our car insurance. I am the primary on our policy but not with Geico. Ndmarie you are his wife and entitled to miltary benefits and discounts.juat not full VA. If they deduct the VA from his reirement he should get the difference back in his retirement. You should check with the retirement people if that's the case.

sadsong- our situation is a bit different. My husband retired from the National Guard, so we don't get his official retirement benefits for many years. The VA disability is something completely different from his retirement. I have put in paperwork to have the remainder of the amount of the disability appointed to the kids and I, but I'm still waiting to find out if that will actually happen.

As for insurance, my husband is the primary on our policy. I think I'm just going to wait and see what happens with that. Figure I'll deal with it if it does become a problem, if not, then that works out too:-)

I hope it all works out - my husband gets both now but for many years just VA disability. Too many wars and broken families.

I would first find out when his license does expire, and if your state supports online renewal, I would try to renew it for him.
Here in Florida, I just renewed my license online, and its good for 6 yrs.!
The reason I say to maybe look into this is because I hear ex-cons (esp. SO's), have a difficult time getting their license, and some states have gone to or considering having some such SO designation on the license, to alert God knows who of their past & present status.
If you can renew it, I would. A valid license in hand is worth so much more than jumping through hoops to re-establish his license when he gets out.
Also, if you remove him from your insurance policy, he might have to explain why he hasn't had coverage for the past 5yrs, and now he needs it again.
Now, I know financial constraints plays into this also, so, I mean, do what you have to do. I just wouldn't change anything if I didn't have to.
In my son's case, he was convicted of CP in the state of Georgia. He subsequently lost his Navy career, lost his new house he purchased about 6months prior, lost his new truck, and his wife left him, and took everything that wasn't nailed down, and left him $5 in their joint account.
Since his truck was financed, when he wasn't around to renew the registration (prior to being repossessed), the state filed in court, and now the state knows he is in Federal prison, so they cancelled his driver's license. Just a mess. Again, do what you need to do, but there can be ramifications down the road. Good luck ....
