Nice! The city of Chicago bans the box as does the state of MN.

Now if only we'd go back to limiting how many years back a criminal record can be searched... Only a few states limit those checks and not for all positions.

I agree IvyDog, the search for criminal background checks should be limited. I understand some jobs limiting who can be hired based on prior offense, but not all jobs.

@IvyDog: The time frame for checking criminal records was changed because the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was changed. The FCRA used to stop checks after 10 or 17 years (depending on the state). Now the FCRA allows checks as far back as they want.

I'm not aware of any Ban the Box law that limits background checks. However, in Washington, DC - the Ban th Box bill was signed by the Mayor, so now it is an Act. It has 30 legislative days (not the same as calendar days) to be reviewed by the US Congress before it becomes a law. The DC version prevents employers from asking the criminal conviction question or even doing a background check before a conditional job offer has been made.
