From my research. . I've found Costa Rica to be one of the few places an SO could possibly safely go to.
It's coming back that is a bitch. They see you're an SO and pull you aside and look thru your phone , camera, etc . and can retain you for some time. Just from what I read of others traveling out of the country.

I'm going to help my son move out of the country, once he's off the registry, if he still chooses to do so.

Go to PrisonTalk, and put in a search. I found a lot of into there.

Please be awre of some other things when leaving the country, #!, you must report your trip, length of trip, where you are staying etc, to the place you register, if You fail to do so, its a third degree felony, happened to me not to long ago. Your free to travel, just make sure you notify

I'm off the registry. So I report to no one.

But I have experienced customs. Not in years but every time I've been out of country they give me a hard time.

Although the last time I traveled abroad smart phones, iPads and digital cameras didn't exist as they do today.

I do remember them taking a Woman's World from my suitcase and thumbing through it. Only later did I realize they were looking for CP!!

At the bottom, it states:
NOTE: There are certain crimes which automatically disqualify you for Costa Rican residency. The list of criminal convictions for crimes that preclude a person from applying for Costa Rican residency are the following major crimes (felonies): Murder; trafficking in illegal drugs/narcotics; trafficking in human beings; trafficking in weapons
or explosives; sexual crimes against minors, the elderly or the disabled;
domestic violence; membership in certain designated gangs

Ah.... I found this: The immigration change instructs immigration officers at the borders and entry points to reject anyone who has been convicted of a serious crime in the last 10 years either in Costa Rica or elsewhere. The measure also forbids entry to anyone who is being charged elsewhere with a sex crime even if the case is not concluded. And then there is the 50-year ban on convicted sex offenders, essentially a prohibition for life.

Life was much simpler without computers that could trace your every move.

So training to Costa Rica, good or bad?

@Ivy - I remember your original post from a while ago. I was going to ask a friend of mine whose husband got off the Registry in California (Certificate of Rehabilitation) a few years ago and who traveled to Costa Rica last fall (Oct 2014). Getting a COR is pretty much the only way off the CA Registry and only applies to a very few and is very difficult to get. Getting the conviction dismissed (~expunged) is the first step. So, aside from not being required to register friend's husband was also technically never convicted of a crime. I am not sure if that is relevant.

We had been in Costa Rica a few years back while he was still on the registry without any issue. But that was before all that travel notification nonsense started. Because no one seems to know what triggers the evil notification I was concerned but optimistic.

I splurged and got on a non-stop flight in order to eliminate any moving parts / layovers. No pre-flight check-in. Got great exit row seats but instead of resting I kept trying to think of a plausible story to tell our neighbor why she might be relieved of dog-feeding after a day and a half.

To make a long story short - nothing happened. Although it took several tries to swipe his passport at San Jose immigration, almost causing me to have a meltdown. But after it went through we went on our merry way and had a great time. Pura Vida!

oh and no secondary inspection upon returning. We just used one of those kiosks and got waved through. Again, this is for someone not required to register.

That is great. Maybe we will try and go. I know being turned back wouldn't be the end of the world but it would be pretty embarrassing with my husbands work people there.

We keep stalling. Lol.

Was wondering if you guys ever made it to Costa Rica. I also am planning a trip there on Feb 27th. I am currently still on probation but got the Judges approval to travel. Just afraid of being turned back once I arrive.
