A little off topic about freedom in the USA

My son got a letter from our wonderful government. It was addressed to 'residence' but also said it was mandatory. It's for the census survey. It gives my son a website to go to so he can fill out this survey. I'm sure they would gladly mail it to him. But when in hell is something like this mandatory or else.
I thought this was a free country? Ok.. I can hear you laughing about that last line right now.

I call the 800 # and asked what would happen if I didn't do the survey and they said I could be fined up to $5,000. I guess they would fine 'resident' but my son lives there, altho I'm the person on the lease. So I guess they would fine me. I asked what would happen if I didn't pay the fine and they didn't know.

I'm an so tired of our country making these bs laws that we have to follow or else. Really , census? or else?

Thanks for letting me rant because I'm just so tired of 'our country' making us do bs stuff.

I will now go online and fill out this thing just so my son doesn't have to worry about it anymore.

So, I can see it now, in the state prison. Just getting in and my bunkie asks me what I'm in for. 'I didn't fill out the census survey'.

That seems shady. It could be a phishing scheme. Are you sure it's from the government?

I would wonder also if it was phishing if it isn't a census year....

no, its for real. I called. They had no real answers. I even spoke with the supervisor. It's all legit.
If it's not filled out they'll hound my son, calling and coming to his house.. and if it's not done they can find him. If he doesn't pay the fine, the law says, he can get a year in prison. Altho I've yet to find anyone being thrown in prison for this yet, but a few people have been fined.
