As far as sending them stuff check with the place first (books and magazines and papers ) each place has different rules. You might even try sending her letters on pretty paper give her something different to look at yes i did that and i used colourful envelops for his letters.
I write my son daily, like a journal of what I've done, what's going on in town, what neighbors are doing, anything I can think of. Sometimes they are just short little paragraphs & other times they are longer. I date each day so it's almost like a calendar to him as well.
Then when I have several days worth, I print it off & mail. It even got him to journal what he does in the way of workouts, etc cuz their days tend to all run together. Hope this gives you some ideas!
I also make a copy of newspaper articles about things in our home area that have happened, that he would like to hear about. Funny police logs of idiotic things people call the cops for, etc.
Awhile ago, I read that people were actually caught living in the woods right behind us. Don't know if they were homeless or fugitives, or what. It was a big deal, and I did not even notice. He thought it was pretty interesting.
We now have a fugitive last seen in our area. He shot a person in a town near where mine is in prison, then fled to a town we moved from 5 years ago. Our favorite town. This is a small, resort community that not much happens. A SWAT team was sent to where he had been seen. They missed him. So now he is somewhere, could be anywhere near here. So many places to hide. I am copying that article to send him. Can't send the newspaper, against the rules.
