He liked to feel involved, and a part of life out here, that he is missing. It helped him alot.
I also send him catalogs for fishing, camping, home improvement, things he would like, and do later. I sent him these so he can make plans for when he comes home. Something to look forward to for him.
I still write to him a couple times a week, but I go see him 2-4 times a week and we talk at least 5 times a day.
Thank god he will be home in about 16 weeks. OMG can't believe I just said that. It does happen, eventually. So I kept him occupied with everything I could think of. He appreciates it so much.
At Christmas, I copied off all kinds of pictures of friends, family, etc. I also bought him presents. Took pictures of them before I wrapped them, and took pictures of the presents wrapped. This way he sort of got a photo album, and also felt he wasn't forgotten at Christmas.
For his birthday I will buy him presents, even though he won't be home yet. I may wear one of the shirts I get him, so he can see it. He wants a Vikings jersey. It will be a dress on me. But I can model it for him. He wants a Nascar jacket... another one. So I will wear that to see him. Then he knows what he got.
I do send him catalogs on things for the house and the odd home improvement magazine, car magazine, car part and tool catalogs as well I also aske his advice on how to fix or do things around the house ( he leaves the garden up to me ) even aske what colour cartins we should get and things like that. I also send him paperback books that I've read......I've sent him heaps of them its to the point I've almost got my own book collection going on!
If you can do the photo thing for there presents then do it they love that!
Yesterday HE sent me a letter of all the things he wanted to say to me. Thanking me for my continual support after all these years even when he didn't deserve it. Telling me how much he wants our life to be better this time, and apologizing for his past horrible things he did while drinking. He could of never said them in person.
It was a letter I needed to read.
It told of how hard its been in there this time with extortion, beating and heart attack. Yep, I think those things were awful, but good in the way they finally knocked it into his head the horrible things that can happen in there, and he doesn't want to risk it again.
He said at our age, we probably only have 20 good years left, if that, and we have to make the most of them, not mess them up like he has. He acknowledged all that it has cost him, and us.
It was a very good letter from him. Maybe all my letters trying to reach down into his heart and soul helped.
Guys sometimes do not want to express themselves in person. Too hard for them. We find it much easier. So letters are it for us. Even when he is home, if he is upsetting me and I don't want to fight, I leave him a letter when I go off to work. They usually help.
