they're called JP4 players. Michael is saving up for one...but it's going to take a while. He says they're pretty cool. He'd still have to go to the kiosk, and plug into it to send an email, I guess...but he can take his time writing up an email instead of the 10 minutes he gets at the kiosk at a time. There's a big selection of music that can be downloaded to it, and it does come with some games. JPay seems to have kiosks in probably all the facilities in Michigan. your guy should be able to email you now (for a price of course) the JP4 player is a way they're trying to regulate the technology...and do away with cassette and cd players. Lees prison are getting kindles!!!

He's had the mp3 and recently upgraded to the 4.

They are $50.

you know my husband wants one and I've been checking jpay and the commissary site and nothing yet for where my guy is..some of the people say one will be $50 and another will be either $70 or $75..some of them have video chat(which I'm hoping they will have one) save a lot of money on trips to see my hubby but the emails I've heard some of them will cost money to send and will take a couple days to deliver so not sure about that...I've researched a lot about them as I am very curious about them.the music and stuff you have to buy like kinda like itunes card but it will be jpay cards which I'm hoping they will be able add itunes and I'll just add my hubby to my itunes account or make him one..

I am trying to find out more about the Kindles that they are getting in the State Prison (North Dakota). Lee said he hasn't seen it yet - but they are getting them - he is thinking about it - think those are close to $200.00. Lee doesn't read very much - so I don't think he would benefit from it - but its his choice - his money :) But i don't know what type of Kindle they are.

Those JP4's - right on the JPay website it says $49.99.
Lee had the JP3 for a long time - and paid 45.00 for it - when they upgraded - they gave them the chance to turn the JP3 in and pay $5.00 more to get the 4's.

I don't know how much Lee uses it - music really - I was telling him he could do a rough draft on it for an email (to me of course, ha!) and then go to the kiosk and load it and then he wouldn't have to sit at the computer so long (they get 1/2 hour per person).

I'm not sure how the video part works - never tried it

I was trying to figure out how to send "credits" to it - so he could get songs....

Debbie: I know the JP4 players are available in many state prisons. I don't know about federal prisons.

Kim: don't bother sending him credits. they charge an arm and a leg for us to buy credits for them. Instead, send him money for commissary and have him buy his own stuff. it'll save you money :)

Thanks for all of the info everyone! Yes, I did find them on Jpay, and it says they are $49 (i think). The problem that I am having is that once I "log in" and his information is up, the only options I have at the top is Add money or Send Email. The JP4 purchase instructions say to click on "music" and go from there. Sadly, there is no "music" option on my screen. I have e-mailed Jpay and am waiting for a reply, but it's been a couple days... I wonder if there if some "red tape" they have to sort through before they will be available in Michigan or if it is the particular facility my husband is in (min security). I have tried calling facility and my husband has also asked around and no one seems to know anything. Typical! :)

Yep, at the top there are actually 3 options in BOLD. "Home", "add money", and "Email". Where is this "music" option they are talking about? LOL.

when I go to Jpay.com I go up in the top right hand corner and click log in. I put in my email and password. then a page comes up with my email stuff on it...and the stamps I have and all. in the blue bar above my email stuff, it says HOME EMAIL VIDEO VISITATION MUSIC. I can click music, it takes me to a page where I can buy a JP4 player

wow, video visitation? we don't have that either. maybe the hold up is Jpay changing their website? I don't know if this is a fairly new thing for michigan as I am new to the whole "reality of prison" and all things related. still taking the crash course. stumbling as I go, but learning too...
