Digg Del.icio.us Facebook Fark Google Newsvine Reddit Yahoo Print Reprints Post comment Text size: One 16-year-old girl is in critical condition and a second is recovering in Lehigh Valley Hospital after they apparently overdosed on methadone they allegedly stole from a KidsPeace counselor.
The April 17 incident at a KidsPeace group home for troubled youths in Saylorsburg has prompted the KidsPeace to put the counselor on administrative leave, and the Department of Public Welfare today closed new admissions to the group home while it investigates how the teens got the drugs, and why the counselor had them.
KidsPeace spokesman Mark Stubis said the company's investigation showed the counselor was legally prescribed the methadone for pain relief.
Methadone is often prescribed to help treat narcotics addiction, but can also be prescribed as a pain medication.
"A case manager who apparently had medicine stolen from her has been put on paid administrative leave while we investigate this matter," Stubis said. "Our concern right now rests with the youths."

The April 17 incident at a KidsPeace group home for troubled youths in Saylorsburg has prompted the KidsPeace to put the counselor on administrative leave, and the Department of Public Welfare today closed new admissions to the group home while it investigates how the teens got the drugs, and why the counselor had them.
KidsPeace spokesman Mark Stubis said the company's investigation showed the counselor was legally prescribed the methadone for pain relief.
Methadone is often prescribed to help treat narcotics addiction, but can also be prescribed as a pain medication.
"A case manager who apparently had medicine stolen from her has been put on paid administrative leave while we investigate this matter," Stubis said. "Our concern right now rests with the youths."
