This community is dedicated to families that have been disrupted by prison. Having a loved one incarcerated or having been incarcerated comes with its own unique challenges that require support and understanding. My name is Niki. My father was arrested and I am awaiting his federal court trial. I’m 35. I’m not a child, I’m independent yet struggling with the absence of my father. There’s not a lot of research, advise or info out there for adult children of the incarcerated. I have become depressed and anxious all the time. I hide. I come from a small town and have become the talk and entertainment of the community due to my fathers very public arrest. I feel alone. I don’t know anyone who understands how I feel. I’m reaching out in desperation that there’s someone out there I can relate to. I have recently lost almost everything financially and look around for support and no ones there. My friends have disappeared completely and I’m left feeling a lot of anger towards “friend” I once had. This has separated and divided the family. I spent Christmas alone as my younger siblings are scattered and busy in life. I’m POA. Is there anyone out there that can relate to me? Ironically I am a trained counselor yet I can’t fix myself.
It is the most horrible and possibly one of the more devastating things to go through. But you have found a good place we really do get it!
Take it one day at a time hell take it a minute at a time but just remember he will always be your dad! Keep writing to him if you can and come talk to us.

I can imagine what you are going through as an adult. I have a degree psychology and worked for about 15 years in mental health. It's easier to support other people in dealing with their issues because we are the detached neutral observe to their pain. It's an entirely different situation when the shoe is on the other foot.

I'm angry and hurt and all the emotions that come up are difficult.
I was able to find a small support group in my town that is similar to this online format. It is a group of friends and family members of incarcerated loved ones. It really helped to surround myself with people who understood, without judgement, what I was going through. Just knowing I am not alone was very helpful.
