Inmates in the custody of jails, state prisons, and federal penitentiaries throughout the country experience violations to their basic human rights on a daily basis. Such as, access to adequate care for physical and mental heath by LICENSED Doctors. Especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The neglect, malpractice, and utter disregard for the well being and safety of those under their supervision has been grossly overlooked, and under-monitored. These facilities do not offer care for mental health from LICENSED mental healthcare professionals, instead nurse practitioners are left to fill the gap, and try to address, and medicate these people, without any knowledge or training in mental health care. Not to mention that most of these issues are brought on and exacerbated by the living conditions that the inmates are subject to within the walls of these institutions. Degradation, mental and physical abuse by facility staff, neglect of basic medical care, solitary confinement and carelessness of those who actually have the ability to change the conditions that these inmates are subject to, IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! Medical malpractice, misdiagnosis, and prescribing medications to inmates without the knowledge of side effects or drug interactions, can cause lasting damage, initiate other unnecessary health problems, cause or worsen mental health issues, or even death. Not to mention if the goal of these facilities and established programs is to REDUCE RECIDIVISM, and help inmates have a lasting and successful transition back to their communities once their sentence is complete, then the conditions inside those walls should reflect those efforts and ideals, especially from those who are in charge of caring for these inmates under their supervision, instead of the carelessness and negligence that they experience on a daily basis. Regardless of whether or not a person is incarcerated, WE ALL HAVE BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS, AND CIVIL RIGHTS, that cannot be negated based on ones custody status.
THOSE RESPONSIBLE NEED TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR CRIMES JUST LIKE THE INMATES UNDER THEIR SUPERVISION ARE BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE.
