Have you talked to the pd about seeing if you guys can at all reduced the amount of time he might get??
You can help him by writing to him as much as you can, write about anything and everything just be warned most places do check the mail. if you can see if the pd will let you do a letter of support and if any of your mates can do one too that can be given to the court.
Also work out a bit of a budget as to how much you can put on the phone and for his canteen and let him know that as well.
Iam really sorry your going though this but come hear as much as you want.
He can try to get his PD to offer a plea bargain to the DA, or counter what the DA offers; but likely hood this wont even be offered until he has gone to pretrial (determines if there is enough to take case to trial, and possibility that charges can be dropped).
I would also add, that if he feels in any way that his PD is not working for him - IMMEDIATELY request new council. PD's are lazy and really don't work for their clients - most only want to push for a plea deal, because that is considered a win.
As my friend Rew would say, if you are struggling emotionally and being able to function, go see your doctor to get on a perception medication to help you - believe me, you are going to need it. I was a zombie the first month when Hub was arrested and took over a year to find the right meds to help me and not make me feel numb.
