My feelings need to be validated

My 23 year old son has gotten sentenced for 2 1/2 years. Yes I knew it was going to happen and yes he did this to himself, but it still hurts me. Why do people not understand that? I don't even want to talk to people about it because they make no attempt to understand my feelings. This has hurt me in such a way that I can't explain. As a parent I did everything I could to steer him in the right direction. I don't want people to feel sorry for me, I just want them to understand that I have a reason to feel so down. This HURTS and I can't help that.

Yes it dose hurt the down part of the hurt that we feel is that a lot of people will never understand what its like because they have never been though this. Unforantaly the only ones who get are the ones like us who have or are going though it. Don't be sorry for how you feel!

I understand what you mean. You have every right to feel how you do, and at times all you want to hear is "I could imagine how much that could hurt you." Simple as that. It is nice to have people on here understand, but it is different than people in your actual life understanding. Spend more time with those that get it and less with those who cant seem to. You have a long, hard 2.5 years in front of you and bad situations reveal peoples true colors.

Parents who care for their children, no matter their age, are going to feel pain when their child suffers. Even if it is because they made mistakes and are being punished. Just remember, as adults, we are all responsible for our own actions and must accept the good and the bad outcomes.

This is a lesson in your son's life that you can hope he learns from.

My husband's son turned 18 while being held to go to prison for 6 years. It's such a helpless feeling. His son survived those 6 years but it'll take time for him to make up for all that lost time and it's harder to find work. I just wish he had not made the choice to break the law in the first place.

Tell your son to make the most of the time he spends locked up. Take advantage of any schooling or trade programs, even volunteering.

Oh mamma boy do I understand, my son just began a 3 month sentence and I am getting the same reaction from people. I knew he was going away, thought I had prepared myself but when it actually happened I fell apart. Everyone is saying but it's only 3 months!! I don't care if it is 3 days, my son is gone and it does hurt. I just stopped talking about it and when someone brings it up I tell them I'd rather not talk about it. The people that don't understand have never been through it so how could they understand,. When you are hurting and need someone to talk to or even vent come here because we do understand. I'll try and help if I can you can always message me.
