Me and mine have had really rocky times recently, and he is coming home Friday, but I am looking at it as a time to do it all differently, both of us must be on that same page, and knowing it may not work, but hoping it will.
Your son can see what it's like to have Dad back, but if it don't work, they will have bonded anyway, if you decide to go your separate ways.
I wish you the best..
On Thursday, before mine gets out of the halfway house, we are going on our " First Date" , in 15 years. I am packing a picnic lunch, bringing a blanket, and we are going to sit by a pretty lake. Going to have a relaxing, nice few hours to start out our new beginning after so many ugly past months. I time with no one else but us.
Give you and your guy alone time too. And the 3 of you, and maybe some just Daddy and son time. You have to learn to be a family, but there also needs to be a division of times too.
I'm sure things will work out for the best for you. It's okay to have doubts, and mixed feelings. Someone gave me this excellent piece of advice a long time ago- you can feel anything, just don't act on it. In other words, let your feelings come, feel them, then take your time deciding what you want to do.
