My mother who is 75 recently went with 3 female friends to NYC. One has a relative who is a policeman so they went to visit him at work.
He gave them a tour of the jail including a cell. Then he locked them in a cell as a joke and took a picture of them as a joke.
My mother lives in another state and told me this story on the phone today. She said she was bothered by this but I'm thinking why in the Hell am I even hearing about this stupid stunt. She knows how upset I've been about my daughters 8 year sentence.
Am I over reacting or is this as cruel as it feels?
Reading the comment someone made about their mother-in-law reminded me of my own mother's insensitivity.

I was easily upset about the whole ordeal for months and months- years really.. I still don't like to talk about it. As a parent, somehow there is a lot of guilt and a feeling of personal responsibility involved in dealing with the situation. I'm supposed to protect my child and guide them from these terrible things. I failed. It sounded like the Mother in Law has completely distanced herself. I suspect she is also dealing with guilt and that's how she copes.
