Just make sure you know the dress code rules for the prison. I just had my first visit Saturday. I tried on all kinds of different things, I wanted to look cute but not sexy. Also not boring. I opted with a spring look, light blue paisley pants, a striped white/ grey shirt. Tennis shoes. I noticed that everyone there was just dressed very casually. T-shirts, blue jeans, some girls had on sweat pants. There was an issue w/ one girl that had on flip flops. So I figure they want your feet covered. I took my make up bag with me so I could fix my face before I went in. I was really nervous!

It does depend on the individual prison. Even if the standard rules for all that state's prison's are listed, some are more lenient than others, some more strict, and it also depends on what guards are at the desk that day. In other words, just play it safe, and if you veer off a little to a little more daring, have other clothes in your car or in your purse you can change into. ( I had a big purse I put in a locker)

I also had what I called my PRISON CLOTHES.. the safer ones. Ones they would never refuse to let me in with. And the PRISON BRA.. which is a sports bra.. no wires.

I am so glad he is home and I don't have to deal with that anymore. It's just ridiculous. One guard at his last place was SO picky she almost sent the newbies out in tears. Other guards just didn't care. Some women dressed downright sleazy and were just glad the easy guards were working when they came like that.

Sometimes I normally ware a nice dress or skirt and top when I go on a visit but I don't ware anything to short or see through or I will get told to cover up.

I travel 5 1/2 hours one way, to visit. So, I make sure that I dress like a "plain jane". I always carry extra pants and shirts in the car when I go, just in case...most times, for me, it depends on the guards who are working the entrance/visiting area.

The rules on dress codes seem to vary in each state.

Best bet is to dress casual as I have seen way to many times when I went to visit my husband at different places hes been in that there was always someone that had to run down to the local Wal-Mart or whatever and get new clothes to wear. I always take extras with me even though I go in jeans and a nice conservative top.

Saturday I wore a brown long sleeve tee and jeans. At Menard in IL you can't wear anything showing skin (for a woman).

Jeans or yoga pants and a plain shirt, no jewelry, no boots, nothing in your hair. I've worn underwire bras and no one said anything but I've heard in some places you have to remove them. No hooded shirts. I wasn't allowed in once because my shirt had a hood.
The COs all have different attitudes. Where my fiance is, there is one CO in particular who seems to be a sadist. He enjoys telling people they cannot go in for the visit. He actually has laughed at women who started to cry. He has a dog who sniffs us for drugs before the visits. I feel sorry for the dog, having to hang out with that guy.

My niece one time couldn't get in with the skirt she had on. She was 8. My father in law had to take her to the store and by sweatpants for her.

In CA, can't wear blue jeans, blue tops/pants. Can't wear sweat grey tops or bottoms. Nothing too revealing (was told once my top showed too much of my shoulders, yet there were women visiting in tank tops.
Lately, I can never seem to find something to wear to see him, so I went shopping just before every visit. Now that the nice weather is coming around again, it will be easier to find something to wear.

I always just wear something cute but not revealing. I have three ear peircing holes in each ear and I started out wearing studs in them all. A couple weeks ago they made me take out two pairs in each ear. What do they think they will do with earrings??? Poke somebody?

I always pack back-up clothes because the COs are so fickle. Where I go, we can't wear khaki-colored clothes and a woman was turned away because she wore cream-colored pants. We can't wear leggings and a woman was turned away because she wore "skinny" jeans. We can't wear anything sleeveless and a woman was turned away because she wore a top with translucent - not even sheer - sleeves.

I've had to change clothes based on warnings from other women before our going-in time and I had to drive back to my motel, so I make sure to pack plenty of back-up outfits and keep them in the car.

Yea. Good idea. I am packing an extra outfit when I go. At Menard in IL women can't wear sleeveless shirts or low cut tops.
