Sorry to hear that your son is going to the hole. I don't know much about it, my boyfriend has been in the hole once and will be going again soon. I was able to send him mail and he was able to send it to me as well. He is always telling me that when he goes this time to please write him a lot. He was in a 8' x 10' cell alone. Yes they can give and receive mail. My son was in the hole for three years he got mail, magazines, cards, books and such like....one thing they do though is usually cut down calls to one a week....sometimes the guard will let them have more but the given is that calls are only allowed once a week.


The hole many times is a safer place and time for them to think.........not necessarily a bad thing....but not good for the person usually if it lasts really long.

Hi Berda, I actually spent time in the "hole" a few times. When I was in county jail, I did 17 months there. In prison, I spent time in the hole in two different prisons. The rules while in isolation might vary from place to place, but generally you are still supposed to get some mail, even if limited. Prisons cannot deny you ANY mail, but they can decide which ones you may or may not get. This might include some pictures, magazines or whatever their rules dictate, which again can be different from one prison to another. But as far as letters and cards, that should not be an issue. But keep this in mind as well, some prisons can in fact LIMIT how many letters you can keep. With isolation inmates, this could be the case, unless the prison is pretty cool with that. Now personally, I had no problems in seg cells (the hole, or isolation, they are all the same). I actually liked the private time to myself to think and rest. Many guys don't like it becuase you lose several privileges adn can be cut off from regular inmate population. Also, I can't speak for every prison, but if I had to describe a seg cell, it might be more like a single room apartment...a bed, some cases a steel desk and bench, and a toilet. Some places are different, so it depends. One good way to get through time in the hole is to have something to read, so it comes back to letters or cards. Hope that helps, there is so much more to seg cells, but I will let others help you in this endeavor.

Yes it is alone time 23 hrs a day and one for exercise.....but they do talk to each other thru the walls so thought they are alone they are not at the same time....when they go out for exercise it is usually two at a time so they can spot each other lifting weights or basketball or whatever.

Okay, thanks everyone for the come back, I appreciate it, I don't know what I was thinking but I am glad that one can receive mail. I don't know if he got sent there since he last spoke to his sister earlier today, but he has not called back, but it could be because he spoke to his two boys also and they cried and asked when he is coming home and got him crying too, so maybe he is just going into himself because of the pain of the conversations today. I don't know what to do when the little ones cry for him, they are only 3 and 4 years old. Thanks again to all who responded. Roberta

My dad was in prison for two years. He got tons of mail, but some of it was material not suitable for prison ( I don't know what exactly: off-color jokes or cartoons, stuff like that) A couple times he was called into the office, they let him see the joke or cartoon, but whatever it was, didn't let him take it back to his cell or keep it.

If you call the prison, they can tell you.

I just saw your post and the way it works is that they hold their mail until they are released from the hole and they get it when they return to their regular cell.
