I just got off the phone with a friend of my husband's and I'm not sure how to handle this so here I am asking for advice. I'm sure we all must have a friend or relative who ask's how everything is and if I can do anything just let me know, well that's just what he did. I told him a little about the things going on and how hard it is to go see my husband as often as I'd like because it's so expensive, he told me he understood and so on and then said the next time you go call me and if I can help even if it's with a tank of gas I will. His friends know how hard things are for me and they know my address and phone # but never call me, I only see them at family functions and then they act like they care, I don't buy it, you know the old saying "out of sight out of mind" that applies to most of his family and a few friends. Would you call and ask for help and if you did how would you do it without asking for a handout? I'd really like to know how you'd handle the situation. Thanks for the input.

I like that this friend offered to buy a tank of gas because that's something you can certainly use that's not too personal. And it isn't anything that would be misunderstood by anyone - or, at least, it shouldn't be misunderstood. I think the gasoline is a thoughtful gift and it shows support for both you and your husband. Maybe, down the road, this friend could suggest to others could chip in for some of your other travel expenses: oil changes, road tolls, engine tune-ups, gift cards for roadside coffee breaks, etc. Start with your gasoline friend and see where it goes from there.
