So sorry for all you are dealing with. Unfortunately we can't change others. If loving them and praying for them was enough, we wouldn't need this board! All you can do is take care of yourself. Physically, spiritually, mentally and financially. I know others will pop on and give you books to read, so you can learn more on how to handle things.
basically, don't argue when he is wasted, and build up an emergency fund and plan.
we didn't cause it, we can't control it and we can't cure it.
If he won't get help- you need to make sure you look after yourself and the children. Remember on airplanes how the stewards say to put the oxygen mask on ourselves first before others? same idea here. decide you boundaries, figure out what you can and cannot live with, and if you decide to stay, get help for yourself and your kids and learn how to NOT enable, and not feed into his illness.

Blueviolet gives excellent advice. The oxygen mask is a perfect analogy. It's very hard to accept that your love or attention can't change an addict because our brains work a different way than them. I thought my ex girlfriend's addictions were due to depression and stress, and being around a loving, supportive, positive person like me she would see how much better things could be and no longer feel the urge to get intoxicatd. But I was wrong. She didn't care if she was hurting anyone else. Even when her own adolescent son asked her to quit, and told her she was violent with him when she was intoxicatd, she showed no remorse and defended her addictions as part of who she is. Until the addict wakes up and admits to him or herself the destruction they are causing, nothing will change. There is absolutely nothing you can to to help an addict "see the light." Nothing. They have to find that on their own. The only thing you can do is make yourself strong and hope they get their soon, so that you can be there for support when they need it.

I know exactly how you feel.... I have been trying to control my husbands addiction for a long time too. You can't control it. Calling his source, etc ...seems like the rational thing to do, but addicts are not rational, and addiction is not rational. I agree with previous posts, you need to take care of yourself first. I recently started counseling....my counselor, along with people here have recommended I read "co-dependent no more"...I have only read the first few chapters, but it is helpful. I am committed to my marriage as well, but I think I have to save myself before my marriage has any chance of being saved. Even if you convice your hubby to get help, if he doesnt really want to, it won't make a difference. Many prayers to you and your family and many ((((HUGS)))).

It is hard to talk to anyone ,(because he was My best Friend for the past 25 years)I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I am in a situation were I am unable to leave ..But I guess That is what I need to for him to Maybe Wakeup ? Or at least Start the Plans and let him know about them..Because Nothing else is working Only. Just want him Better If not for our marriage But for our Children. Before Going to rehab last year ..He admitted that I saved his life .( He would have been dead or in jail if he wouldn't have went ) I cant Thank you all enough For your thoughts
