Families & Friends Of Addicts Support Group
Addiction affects more than just the individual. This community is dedicated to the families and friends of individuals suffering from any form of addiction. Mental health professionals are increasingly considering alcoholism and addiction as diseases that flourish in and are enabled by family systems. Family members react to the addicted person with particular behavioral...

Since your dad and then you step dad had addiction you have a higher chance of either being an addict or being the codependent person. Its good to be kind hearted and want to help someone, but know that when an addict is telling you something it usually is for their benefit. Also you cannot change an abusive man, no matter how many times he says it will not happen again, it will. Men who abuse woman very seldom stop, to them you are like their property. Read the book Why Does He Do That?: Inside the Minds of Angry and Controlling Men by Lundy Bancroft. He has worked with numerous abusive men and almost all went back to their controlling abusive ways. They would start to make changes but went back to their old ways.
You look young, pretty, find something you love to do, go to college and make a good successful life for yourself. You can love your dad for the happy times, no one is perfect, everyone has skeletons in their closet. Cherish the good times and let the unhappy times go by the wayside.
What I would like to suggest is that you give a complete family medical and psychiatric history to a qualified Psychiatrist and see if there is an underlying history of mental illness in your biologic (what you know of them) family. This is so important for you right now as you search for the truth. It is important to find this out and seek treatment to help you cope. Once you find out you can decide which way to go. Excercise, therapy, medication, behavior modification are all good ways to help you. I wish I had more time to write.
I went through many years feeling rejected and unloved and I actually had a mom and a dad and the white pickit fence. Little did I know that my mother was mentaly ill and she rejected me in so mny ways and then she died. I was in and out of therapy for years until I found out I was Bipolar. I started treatment and have been stable for 7 years. I ahve to go for now but keep intouch. Request me on facebook because I am easier to get a hold of. (Cissy MCfadden) take care
This can be a life changing book for someone like you. I hope you'll consider getting it. You'll be surprised by what's inside! Take care of you . Life will improve , if you do!

It's not possible to pick your parents, biological or adoptive, but you can pick your friends and your boyfriends. Unfortunately, you got the short end of the stick when it came to parents. That's on them. It has nothing to do with whether you are lovable or not. It's that they were not capable of loving anyone.
When you believe that you don't deserve to be loved, then you will attract people in your life that will treat you badly. A person who loves themselves and believes they deserve to be treated well doesn't put up with crap. They push people like that away before they get in too deep. They attract people who treat them well and want to be with them.
Loving yourself will take practice. The best thing to do is to stop being around people that treat you badly. If you aren't ready for that, find other ways to do something special for yourself. Eat well, exercise, go to a movie, take a hot bath, go to church, join a club or buy yourself a treat. Do something every day for yourself and soon you will believe that you deserve it. Think, too, about the long run. You are young. What do you want to do with your life? When you have a goal, such as going to college, it helps to make you more positive. When you start to succeed, it makes you believe you can continue.
Another way to feel good about yourself is to do volunteer work. Help serve a Thanksgiving meal at a shelter, help deliver presents to poor children, or go ring a bell for the Salvation Army. You will feel proud. A side benefit is that you will meet other volunteers, who will generally be pretty good people. The holiday season is the perfect time of the year to volunteer. There are so many good opportunities.
Good luck and keep in touch.
