My son lost his license. He did it. Not me. When he comes home and needs to get to a meeting I will be happy to give him a ride there. Anything else and he needs to figure it out. I didn't make him use drugs. I'm surely not going to sign anything and put myself at my age (55) in a situation where I may have to carry that debt.
He's going to be a Dad. Take it from me (read my post he flew under the radar). I did it all for my son. So much.
If we want them to become men and stand up on their own two feet then they need us to stop
Because she was doing a 40 hour a week internship (for free) and only working part time, the bank she was dealing with (getting ripped off by) pulled her funding without a cosigner...I had NO intention...but anyway, we did. She is not our addict. She is a type A personality and a workaholic devoted to her clients. (an Occupational Therapist who specializes in equipment for multiply handicapped adults)....ANYWAY...I don't think about it often, but it is still a HUGE burden for us. It, besides the house, is our only indebtedness. She pays over 700 bucks a month...I don't want to be on the hook for that in our retirement. In fact, I had her put us as her beneficiaries on her life insurance, as disgusting as that sounds because I read about a family who are still paying for their now deceased child's college loans!
It would be lovely to be able to pay for my son's wedding, give my daughter a new car (hers has 200k miles) but we can't
So we can't
we can not.
And maybe someday they will have to make the same choice.
And maybe that is the way it is supposed to be.
He is doing well. He will figure it out.
I pray for them, but they have to figure it out themselves.
He is coming for a visit this long weekend. I am picking him up as his car won't make the 'trek' up here, it's basically a 'local driver' to get him to work and back.
I'll be able to tell how well he is actually doing then. That cynical voice in my head never goes away, sad to say. Only time will tell.
This whole addiction thing sucks for not only the addict, but those that love them seem to have the worst time of it, no matter what. SMH....
It took me a couple of years before I relaxed about his recovery...so that is something I wish I could have worked harder on. Trust takes time to rebuild.
meanwhile. Enjoy, celebrate. and yes, send him home with goodies.
enabling, and gifting can be two different things when they are well.
I think the visit, and goodies are great positive reinforcements for him.
Let us know how it goes!
