One question? Is this your hubbys child as well? That makes it all different for me...I would be really confused if this is his stepfather...I would be like..."He doesn't understand". But, if it is his biological father and he is supporting the FACT not to buy the tires...than I would have to admit that not buying the tires would be the right thing to do and if his bio Dad is not stressing over it....than maybe I shouldn't be either.
Like kdgsupermom said....catching them when they fall...that seems to make sense to me..he's really not down and out at this point...just struggling.
I too struggle with watching my kids struggle.
But again...same as you...I was basically a single mother and got thru life...tires, cars, rent, food, clothes for myself and kids....etc.
It is hard, and we would like to help...especially when they are sober. My son just asked us for a contribution towards his wedding. we did it. and then the mom of the bride backed out of her contribution....so now what????
Yes, they are grown ups. My daughter bought used tires to get her car to pass inspection....I would have paid for hers and she has the cc for emergencies...
he is smart, he will figure it out.
guilt,,,,the gift that keeps on giving...
I ended up NOT helping him. In my mind, he has a job, he has responsibilities coming up with a child and he needs to LEARN how to save his money, not be in such a 'rush' all the time and be responsible with his money.
Guess what? HE got those tires on his own, he had to wait a paycheck or two, but he did it! And he needed some further work to get it inspection ready and it is going in today to get the work done and the sticker done. Yes, he had to 'wait' a bit to get it done, but he did it! And he has a sense of 'accomplishment' at doing it on his own.
It's teaching us BOTH a lesson, me on backing off and him on being more responsible with his $$$ and getting only the things he 'needs' v.s. 'wants'.
Hoping and praying he stays this course for the rest of his life, he seems to be flourishing in sobriety and notices the difference.
Prayers and hugs to all!
I thought he wouldn't get the tires...See....
I'm impulsive and would have bought them.
Good thing you waited and now you know what he is capable of doing and so does he...like you said!
Blessings for continued growth.
I think that you made the right decision you did well .
