Our recovering addict {going on 1 year clean from drugs, 7 months clean from alcohol} is dealing with a severe back injury which has been ongoing for over 6 months. Recently, he was prescribed steroids and ibuprofen for the pain and inflammation. He consistently refused narcotic pain killers informing the doctors treating him that he's in recovery.
He has been living with us since last November. A few weeks ago, about the time he was prescribed the steroids, we noticed a marked change in his mood. He became extremely irritable, short-tempered, and angry. He also began lashing out at his fiance for minor things, and became very jealous. He has been snapping at everyone. He's acting very aggressively - like a bully. We don't believe he's back using again...in fact, he reminded us all that he's coming up on 1 year clean.
We are wondering if the steroids and/or pain meds have triggered this change. After researching this via Google, our suspicions have been confirmed so there is the possibility that this is the case.
I'm just wondering if any of you have had a similar experience with your addict?
Our addict feels that because he did hard drugs for over 10 years, he's sort of "immune" to the adverse effects of other drugs. I'm thinking that perhaps since he's been clean for a year, that he is, in fact, more sensitive than ever?

and when I have to be on big doses for asthma...I am pms'd and vivid dreams and over emotional/crazy.
Google it I cant tell all the details. Of course everyone is different , different response
I disagree with the being "immune" thing. If anything, I think he would be more sensitive to the drugs. Sorry you have to live with that.
My son was not an addict..but addicted to lifting weights and becoming strong and went thru a period of using steroids.
He changed drastically...mood swings, depression, anger, violent outbursts.
Your sons' Dr. needs to change your sons medication not only for your safety but for your sons. Because as an alcoholic for me when I get uncomfortable feelings early in detox...I want to use. He has to feel uncomfortable...and his sobriety in my opinion is in danger. There are other ways to manage the pain....
