I disagree with the being "immune" thing. If anything, I think he would be more sensitive to the drugs. Sorry you have to live with that.
My son was not an addict..but addicted to lifting weights and becoming strong and went thru a period of using steroids.
He changed drastically...mood swings, depression, anger, violent outbursts.
Your sons' Dr. needs to change your sons medication not only for your safety but for your sons. Because as an alcoholic for me when I get uncomfortable feelings early in detox...I want to use. He has to feel uncomfortable...and his sobriety in my opinion is in danger. There are other ways to manage the pain....
