My 21 yr old son is a heroin addict. He went to court last week for probation violation and the Judge extended his probation for one year with random and frequent drug screens. Since then he lost his job...his version was that the boss asked all of his employees to take a drug screen and none of them took drug screens because they all knew they would fail...he fired them all. I found spoons in his bathroom over the weekend which he insists are from when he was using " a long time ago". He just lies about everything. He has pawned almost all of his tools. The girlfriend, who is also an addict, is back in the picture. She is having the same problems as him...no job, strained family relationships, etc. I received a phone call from her father on Friday evening that the "word on the street" is that my son is dealing heroin. He has tried twice to detox, one time at home and one time in a facility. Both times he has failed. I have finally been able to get him approved for health insurance which goes into effect Aug. 1. He has 4 doctor appointments between Friday and Monday of next week. Because he has no transportation and I work out of town, IOP is not an option for him although I know that's what he needs. There is no IOP offered in the town we live in. He starts SA counseling next week. He has been going to NA meetings, about 2 - 3 a week. I have come to believe that he isn't serious about any of this...he is just saying what he thinks I and everyone else wants to hear just to keep himself out of jail. I am at the end of my rope and God help me I feel like there are some things worse than death, for him and me.

Do you go to Al-Anon? If not, I highly recommend it! Things have gotten so much better for me since I started going in March. I have learned so much and I had no idea what to do. I have lots more to learn but I would still be lost without Al-Anon. I'll be praying for you and your son too. I have been going through similar things with my son. It just kills you and zaps the life right from you. Don't forget to take time to take care of yourself. Hugs! Cher

My son was in jail on a non drug related sentence. He got out on parole in December. Last month he lost his life to a drug overdose. He was using heroin. I found out that he met someone while in jail that was dealing. Within only a few months of him doing this he overdosed. I could see that he was not the person he had been. I confronted him many times about the fact that he was going drugs. His reply was always denial. I have heard that once a person does heroin that they will crave this drug; its effect on your brain is like a cancer. The most deadly drug because of it's addictive hold. I pray that your son can beat the odds. Whether life is better than death in this situation - I could only wish that I had another chance; although it would have probably been in vain. God Bless You in this horrible time.

All our stories are so similar. Addiction is a horrible disease. I know my son says what he thinks will make me feel sorry for him and begin the cycle of enabling. I refuse. We love our children so much but they have to sincerely want recovery. I don't think my son is there yet. Prayers for you and all of use who are dealing with this.

Alanon saved my life. After more than a decade of the same story, I was actually making a plan for ending my life, and I am a really strong person. I went to 3 meetings in one day, and many others over some weeks. I stopped trying to fix my heroin addict. Five years later, we are raising his 4 year old daughter (mom addict as well) and they both are still using heroin. But I am not all wrapped up in it. Just very tired being a grandparent raising a grandchild. Find the meetings, and go. Nobody gets how this feels unless they are living it. Alanon people know.
