So my son ASKED for information about the treatment center we have tried to get him to go to forever. Good sign but of course I'm weary and I go online and print out all this wonderful information about the program. Its a two year commitment, offering schooling and employment and how to reenter society, Just an overall good program and what do they do at the jail?
RETURN to me unsuitable material for an inmate!! WTF???? He asked for it and it was all positive helpful information.
Thats right we don't want our inmates to get rehabilitated cause then they won't come back to prison and you won't have a job!! What possible reason would they have for returning this to me without letting Justin read it????
So now I have typed him a letter and I'm wondering if they will return that to me too.

That's stupid! What the heck do they consider inappropriate?! Is there any person you can talk to about that?

Marg That sucks that they did that ! Don't give up ( I know you won't ) When are the "people in charge" going to understand that drug/alcohol addiction is not a choice and really do something about getting them the help they need instead of sticking them in jail cells with no help for the problem that brought them there to begin with. Our society would benefit so much from the right assistance for addicts instead of just prolonging the inevitable . I would save that returned letter and contact your local government authorities to shed light on just how ridiculous that was you are his mom who is trying to help him for his sake yours and public welfare duhh less drug addicts= less crime wake up people Hugs Dee

I used to type...because they had a limit of 3 pages, so I could fit more- funny, I forgot that until just now..
but they really don't have time to read it...so you could insert info, and that would work. Yeah, rules are stupid.
If there is a Chaplin, you could probably have them go over it with him. or you could do it F@F via glass booths and telephones...
You learn to think like a criminal to do normal stuff for inmates when they are the ones in jail...how to sneak more info in, or I used to send books...thru amazon...you can't give a book at the desk, it has to be sent from a company...so send him a good book -about addiction...and he can donate it when he leaves so that the next guy can read it.

It could have been for a simple reason like a page limit, not necessarily because of their attitude towards addiction. You mentioned in another post that he tends to go to rehabs to avoid other consequences only. Maybe he asked for the info because he was trying to 'bargain with' the process... which is just another addict trait.

If someone is ready to change, they won't care about the finer details of the rehab/other option they are choosing. I have made a decision to get help with my addiction (overcaring) - I'm not thrilled about some of the finer details of my chosen option, but I tolerate them because I am desperate to heal. That's the difference between someone who has hit rock bottom and someone who is still trying to negotiate their way out of rock bottom.

yeah I don't know if my son has hit rock bottom or not and I don't know if he is the least bit serious about treatment either. He may have asked for the material to pacify me. In the letter I wrote to him I mentioned the horrible things he had done and that he BETTER had reached his rock bottom because if treatment was not where he was headed directly after jail than his family did not want any more of their time wasted on trying to help him. We would be done with him. I know its so harsh but its really where we all are with him by now....

Good for you. You're being honest with him and keeping it real. Jail is a great place for them to realise the truth. Despite this, many addicts still don't hit rock bottom there. That amazes me - I'd "get it" as soon as the judge finishes talking, but then I'm not a drug addict.

If he is genuine about rehab, he will let you know. Otherwise just keep sticking to your guns, keep reaching out for help for YOU.

I guess the prison doesn't want to loose the money they get per immate. I read where the government cost for the place you sent info on is around $2200.00 a year while it cost $12,000.00 to keep a person in jail.
Its all politic's.
