My son told me that when he was an active alcoholic he was a real a$$hole. and now that he is sober, he still can be, but he realized he can't blame it on his DOC....
Getting sober is healing in mind, body and spirit. it all has to be in balance. it is more than "not using"...and in this, like any situation, you have a right to be happy, safe and have a good life.
The hardest choice is to decide if we should walk away, or try harder.
I do want to point out that people's personalities do change, brain chemicals and the like...and even my husband, who has had several strokes, has had great personality changes....so sometimes things aren't always just addiction. Be well, peace.
I would say you should go for some help...to stay balanced! And in alanon they always say that we are the light at the end of the tunnel...our well being shows them something that they might want to achieve.
also, we can't fix 'em. not matter how much we love them, or hate whatever it is they are doing---story time!
My husband smoked ciggarettes for all 32 years of our marriage...never inside etc...but my daughter had asthma...my son started smoking...and he had a bunch of strokes...I tried everything. I even took him to a cardiologist in the AM and the lawyer for wills in the PM...nada.
then he saw me in the hospital 4 times this december, for asthma, and he saw the person in bed next to me with copd...(the third time) he still didn't quit. Bought Alan Carr's "how to quit smoking" read it S-L-O-W-L-Y...and my last time in (4 days long)...he finally quit.
really? why? Nothing I did made any difference, just like with my son quitting drinking - he did it on his own (he is trying to quit smoking, still). But I learned if I couldn't stop hubby from smoking, and doctors said it could kill him- I could damn sure raise my life insurance on him (while the kids were young) and sign up for disability insurance on him. I couldn't change him, only what I could do for myself and my future
do what you need to. be selfish in a good way, you will feel less resentment, and maybe one day he will decide to snap out of it...if not? at least you are still gonna be having a good time with your life!
