Dee it's wonderful to hear that your Shawn is doing so well in his recovery and his latest "bump in the road" is just a typical growing pain. For most non-addicted kids I think they learn these lessons at a much earlier age (my daughter did) but not so much when using. My addict son's psychiatrist told us his brain and cognative processing stopped when his use started (age 12) and to expect delayed development as they rehab away from it.

It's so easy for us as parents to want to help and protect our kids and so very hard to let them go and fly on their own. But guess what, if we keep doing for them how will they ever learn to become mature & responsible adults? Frankly I think when we do that it's no different than when an addict is enabled; only rather than making it easier for them to use we're making it easier for them to be lazy and co-dependent on us for everything. However, I do believe that realizing there is a developmental delay and being there to support and encourage vs drawing the line at enabling them from growing is a fine balancing act that we as parents of the recovering addict must learn to negotiate is also a part of their successful recovery. So bottom line, I think you handled your situation perfectly ~~ hugs across the miles & hang in there!!!

Hi Dee i am always here for you as you have always been there for me. I think you have done exactly the right thing. You have offered Sean your advice and he knows what he has to do. I know no matter what their age we just want to spare them any and all hardships from poor decisions but as we all know it is a differant set of rules when dealing with an addict even when they are in recovery and doing so well like Sran is we still have to step back and as Blue says fail forward.i am sure Sean will take care of it. I wish someone would invent a contraption that would shock us moms every time we even think about stepping in and fixing our addict's problems. What's curious is that I don't react like that with my daughter, who's 2 1/2 years younger than her brother, my addict. But with him, it's like I go into overdrive. Such a hard habit to break. I applaud you for moving into the next level of detachment. Now...if you could only get your insides to stop turning! LOL

Dee you are very wise.. trust your "gut". Blue makes a very good point, online insurance.. supposedly pretty easy.. now, Beantown, when you invent that "shock collar" for moms... I'll be your first order.. lol
