I hear that all the time from mine. He always has had trouble sleeping. I suggested Benadryl. Of course he didn't want to hear it because Xanax does that trick. Ugh. My son does have high anxiety and if wasn't an addict could use something for it. But we know what Xanax does to an addict.

Can you discuss seroquel with a doctor? It is commonly used. Not sure if it has addictive qualities. Research it. Prob for my son is he had trouble getting up at rehab on it.

I don't think Seroquel is a good thing. he could try running on treadmill or on the spot till he gets tired. warm baths....melatonin.....but no drugs....exercise...or gravol. take care of yourself

my son used exercise. he ran, then he worked out....it gave him a natural high and then let him sleep.

sleepy time extra tea with valerian....nature's valium.

A regular schedule. that is all I can think of.

My mom, 85 with lousy sleep has been told NO by her doctor....she is 85, with pain issues...and NOT an addict. A good doctor, will NOT do it.

Well my son went back to the Dr. and came back with a prescription for Klonopin. This is how it starts! Although it's the lowest dosage, he self medicates then mixes it with alcohol. I don't want to babysit his pills again....texting me for another one, when am I coming home, etc., etc. My husband is going to court to have him removed. Why would my son go back after being clean. He is supposed to be starting work again this week and the rule was to come off the meds! Part of me wants to see how he does on the low dose of klonopin, but my husband isn't having it! My son has no boundaries and sucks us in little by little. He was set up at a great outpatient program, but didn't like the fact that the Psych dr. there wanted him off all the meds. He went for the evaluation and never went back, didn't give it a chance. We are slowly going back to his rules! I am so sick of this roller coaster. Perhaps him getting out will give us the peace we need. This has been 3 years of hell (2 overdoses in my house, constant people coming over looking for money and the last stint was him being taken out in a straight jacket which led him to rehab). I don't like where this is going.

That Doctor is an ass. You don't ever give that to an addict. I would be concerned for sure

Your son needs a new doctor. Klonopin is addictive.

My son was given melatonin in rehab. That should be the first step.

Recently my doctor referred me for a sleep study and they told me I had to try sleep medication first. I'm reluctantly trying a low dose of Trazodone. It's very mild. My son's doctor also recently prescribed this and said it was not addictive. It's also a mild anti-depressant. That said, you'd have to trust him not to take it with alcohol or to take more than prescribed.

Does your son smoke marijuana? That can interfere with sleep.

I think you and your husband have good instincts about where this is headed.

I'm assuming he is over 18, of course, but while his doctor must respect his confidentiality, you can absolutely make sure the doctor knows his history if you want to... If he is not honest about that with the dr. it will impact the prescriptions. Not sure if this is "over involvement" but thought I would mention it.

Thanks so much but things are already out of control. Found some empty beer cans in his closet and I know he's mixing again witht the pills. His attitude this morning proved it....very angry, agressive and manic. I guess it's to the courthouse we go to have him removed. I feel like someone just ripped my heart out and stomped on it. :(

I am so sorry that you are going through this again...glad you caught it early....kicking him out might be saving him. I know how hard it is

I'm sorry. This is so hard. I wasn't able to do it. The best I could do is co-sign on an efficiency apartment so my son was at least out of our house. I'm proud of you for having the strength.

The good news is that you and your husband have learned from this situation and have good instincts and are on the same page. That will serve all of you well.

Donna, Not feeling very courageous. I almost feel like I gave up and am throwing him away but he can't stay here. I'm hoping the ultimatum will scare him into a long term facility. This thing has taken him over....it makes me so sad. I say why can't he just see everything he is losing but I know he is not rationale and not thinking clearly. This disease is a monster and I hate the life it has created for him and for what it has done to my once beautiful family, happy family, smiling family. Just don't know how much I can take.
