Maybe if she is so bent on the marijuana tell her to ask her doctor for medicinal marijuana or the pills and if she sees no reason then there shouldnt be a reason she smokes and if the doctor does find a reason they will prescribe it legally
Just my thought
Good luck !
There are proper drugs to treat nausea and most doctors would want to be sure the person had exhausted those possibilities before marijuana was considered. People often use pot to self-treat nausea. It doesn't work and is just another excuse for doing drugs, imho. Well it does work for a short period, but not without side effects like affect on mood, motivation, not to mention the issues that come with smoking instead of ingesting it.
People can find research to support either side of this debate. For me the bottom line is that if you have a tendency towards addiction or mental health issues, you should stay well away from illicit drugs.
Your mother sounds very challenging to be with. I support 100% your efforts at detaching with love (or without it if necessary, as they say!)
With my friends husband"s cancer his nausea could be really bad. Chemo not only kills the cancer cells it damages other organs in the body. Eventually if you have too many chemo treatments, its the chemo that starts to kill you. This is what happened to my friends husband. My other friends mom had a spot in her lungs she died within a year of her chemo treatments. Her nausea was also really bad and this poor woman, she was around 70 at the time, had to take a bus to and from her chemo treatments, her daughter felt her mom was faking how bad she felt. We tried to tell her no her mom was telling the truth, even had a nurse friend tell her but she still didn't believe her mom. In the end the mom went to a nursing home and died within 3 months.
With your mom if the pot helps her, and it has been shown that pot helps with nausea then let her smoke the pot. She is paying for her past behavior now with her cancer and I would just except she will smoke pot, smoke cigs and be glad she isn't still smoking crack.
Its your choice to help her and to be honest I think its great of you. There is no one who is perfect, everyone makes mistakes and with addiction its not a simple matter to quit as some think. I sometimes feel we want to write off someone because of their addiction which is a disease, but we wouldn't write off someone who had cancer or diabetes.
If your mom want to continue smoking cigarettes and pot I think you should let her be. Its her choice, try not to be so controlling over what she should or shouldn't be doing. I know that can be hard as its this past behavior filled with some resentments, but this is out of your control.
I've known from a very young age that there is nothing I can do to make my 'mother' be any other way than the way she is. And I've had to struggle with that all my life. With the help of lots of therapy, I realized one day just to speak up when she starts to suck the life force out of me. It's unfortunate but that's how I've been able to protect myself from her co-dependent ways.
I'm not trying to make her stop smoking pot or cigarettes--that's her choice. And she knows where I stand with it. I am just trying to get a better grip on the truth.
I have watched my Great grandmother die of bone marrow & breast cancer, her daughter--my grandmother die from lung & breast cancer. My Great grandmother lived an additional 7 years after her treatment. My Grandmother was not so fortunate, the chemo killed her within a year after being diagnosed. I do understand that each person responds to treatment differently. I know all too well.
Thanks.
As a child I had a hard time, my mom left when I was about 3. So I do understand as I lived with my grandmother and later my dad and a mean stepmom. Last month I went back home to visit with my dad, and I was able to let him be who he is and not try to make him bend to what I think is best. We had a nice time and it was time to go home too fast. So enjoy what you can, before you know it they will be gone. My dad is almost 80 and very sick. I know we all make mistakes in our life and we all do our best or think we are doing what is best. So I decided it wasn't doing me any good holding onto resentments.
I don't mean to be blunt, but it looks like she is nearing the end of her life. If she's still being selfish and demanding enough to seek money from a terminally ill relative... well I know for me I would be saying no more - no more taking from me without any gratitude. Addiction or not, no one can keep giving year after year when the person never thinks about saying thank you.
If she was thankful, you probably wouldn't mind doing some caring things for her, despite all that has happened. But with her current attitude, she may die without ever gaining insight into the love and care and forgiveness you have shown her. It just is what it is. She lacks insight, and you get to choose how much more you will give out to her. Being someone's mother doesn't give a person the right to use and abuse their adult child.
So when her doctor told her she really needed to lay off the smoking all together, she used nausea as the reason why she won't stop. The doctor told her that based on all her health charts and current tests, she really shouldn't be having problems with nausea at this point. This was her favorite doctor. Now she can't stand this doctor!
So anyway, she's likely to need care again, one way or another. It sounds like watching her self-destruct is unpleasant for you. You must be so tired of hearing the excuses, the cop-outs and the victim-speak. Maybe you need a respite break.
