As far as how do you stop caring if he lives or dies. I know it's difficult, but it is possible to love someone and not be with them. Someone on here said something very wise about that particular concern and I think of it every day I check the obituaries to see if my ex is in there: "what if he dies without me? what if he dies with me."
Join the gym, start a new class, attend a new church, volunteer, anything to get yo mind off of yourself and him. I agree with strong, you do sound logical.... put logic into your own recover and use it as your tool to recovery over your addiction to him.

You've done what is right for BOTH of you in this situation. You can't fix him, you know that, he has to fix himself. Rejecting him in his addictive state is the only thing you can do to truly love both yourself and him..
You may not stop caring for quite sometime, but have faith to know you made the right choice.
